Mine are doing it as well, 26K miles. I plan to remove, sand blast and powder coat gloss black. I did the same to my XDrive40i, its not horrible to get them out of there.

I have this slick metallic black that I powder coated my golf carts grill bars in... I might do them in that. It's a subtle metallic. I hope to tackle it tomorrow. I will post before and afters if I get it all done.

Here was the xDrive40i right after I did them:

Has anyone had success getting these replaced? I took mine to our local Minneapolis dealership and was told that they no longer have parts. My only replacement option would be chrome.

In my humble opinion, if you only want to screw with them once... take them off and get them powder coated. If you manage to get the dealer to replace them, they are going to do the same thing again.

If you PC them with proper prep, they will last. I am not going to say forever, because "stuff" can happen. But with proper prep and good powder they will probably outlive your ownership.

And if you don't "know a guy", they are really small parts that take very little effort for any coater to do. So you should be able to get them done easily for under $100. If you lived anywhere near me, I would do them for free.

Happened to me. I took it to my local BMW dealership here in Minneapolis and they only offered chrome. Ridiculous for a $80K vehicle under warranty.

I’m going the BBQ paint/caliper paint route.

I cannot believe what I just wrote haha.

What do chrome exhaust tips look like?

I got the same response from the dealer. Wondering if anyone has replaced black with chrome? If so, how do they look. Exhaust tip paint is peeling on 2020 X5 & 2022 X7. Painted the tips on the X5 and may do the same on the X7 if the chrome looks funky. TIA

One of the first things I did on the X5 I received last month is paint that bare part of the exhaust surround. It just looked so out of place, IMO.

I basically used the same method as with past exhaust tips that lasted years without issues/flaking.

1. Mask off everything near it
2. Clean thoroughly with 90% alcohol
3. Self Etching Primer (2 coats)
4. Heat Gun
5. High Temp Low Gloss Engine Paint (2 coats)
6. More Heat Gun!

If you miss some spots (it's easy to overmask), wait a few weeks for the paint to cure and you can touch up. I see a few tiny spots of silver on the edges that I'll go touch up that way soon. Using paint cans sort of sucks for projects like this since they spray so much, and I wish I still had an adjustable airbrush instead.

EDIT: I got a Paasche airbrush and touched up the few spots and it's been great so far. The key is the self etching primer and heat gun use to speed up curing.

My OEM replacements were installed last week under warranty and they are silver inside. More specifically, they look like brushed stainless.

I took my vehicle for an unrelated issue and they ended up swapping mine out because they were peeling. I didn't even ask for it, or really know. They did bring it up but I just brushed it off. Overall I miss the peeling ones because they were all black inside on my extended shadow line carbon black x5. Overall I was pretty happy that they just took care of it the first time I've taken my vehicle in for service.

“Exhaust Pipe Embellisher” - flaking paint on left side (39k kms)

Hey guys

Picked up a July 2019 X5 this week, seem like this is a thing. Can someone update me on the success - or not - of having this covered off as a Warranty issue. My warranty expires Nov 2023. Thx

Stuabroad covered under warranty - shouldn’t be an issue to replace - well known issue

Due to volume of claims, BMW is no longer replacing with the exhaust embellishers with black internals - they’re now replacing with unpainted insides - brutal - will not look as nice if going for a blacked out look

I did the replacement today, I make it sure before going to the dealer that the replacement part was black but after taking back the car the inside of the tips were gray /stainless, not black! I'm very disappointed and even the new parts doesn't seems to be new..it like they sand it without replacing it! And I'm wondering why the welding point is not painted?

Roch M4 yeah that does not look brand new - such a shame they don’t paint them black anymore!

Yes. I just got a '22 X5 xDrive40i M Sport. Had the completely black exhaust tip/frames but one was peeling. My friend at the BMW store next to my dealership had them replaced under warranty. HOWEVER. The tips were black on the outer bit, and like silver/chrome on the inside.. I tried ordering two different sets now on my own, and both have come either wrong size or still with the chrome inserts on the inside rather than smoked all the way through. I spoke with the BMW parts department and they said " BMW has discontinued the full painted tips due to the paint failing so often". So I am not sure where else if anywhere, you can find them unless you have them painted yourself.

only 2 months and under 1,000 miles but the ones I prepped/painted are holding up fine. I now really want to pull that dumb mismatched lower grey surround part off and get it painted phytonic blue. If anything the blue part by the hitch should be grey not the other way around.

This is exact same version in 2024 LCI models with M sport package.

I always thought that non body colored plastic piece across the back gave the X5 40i and the M50i a cheap econo car look.

Adding my two cents - my 2019 X5 MSport I picked up last month had idnetical peeling, mainly on left exhaust but also on the right. First Service at dealer, they replaced both under warranty, no questions asked.
