Apple Pay shown when charging

After starting to use Connected BMW app, my phone starts to show Apple Pay when charging. It never happened before I used Connected BMW. Any solution?

Just picked up my new X5 and threw it on the wireless charger. No issues with Apple Pay. They also did a software update before I could take delivery so I'm not sure if that changed anything to fix the issues.

I updated as well. The problem shows up after setting your Apple CarPlay or connected drive

I'm guessing (I didn't read any of the links or other OPs) that since you're using the digital key NFC is integrated into the wireless charging area to confirm a 'key is present' for the car to start. Since Apple does things in a backwards manner having an active NFC anything turns on the payment app. You can disable the digital key or see if there's an option to disable Apple Pay from automatically turning on when a NFC antenna is close.

You can't. It is a known issue for BMW and engineers are working on a solution.

So you can't uninstall the BMW Connected app as a temporary solution?

It doesn't have anything to do with the BMW Connected app. The wireless charger in the X5 has NFC for digital key that you can't turn off. When iPhone gets near it thinks it's an ApplyPay reader and turns on ApplyPay. This has happened to me with my car and 3 others at the dealer that I was playing around with. No way to disable the NFC in the X5 and no way that I know of to disable NFC in the iPhone. Even if you don't have ApplePay set up, I've heard that it prompts you to set it up when the iPhone is placed on the wireless charger.

This is straight from BMW NA:

"Engineering is aware of this issue, we brought it up to them as well again in a recent meeting. It is doing this since it is recognizing the NFC reader. Hopefully I can forward you a fix or answer soon, I've taken note and be sure to let you know should I hear anything."

I have trouble believing their testing didn't uncover this very basic and super common use case. Infact given iPhone is the single most common smartphone with bmw customers its quite shocking. This isn't some weird edge use case but the base use case lol.

Agreed. They must have tested CarPlay with NFC equipped iPhones. You would have thought they would have tested this to. Of course their testing may have uncovered this issue and they deemed it "not a blocker".

My guess is they tested it, knew about it, but determined that it wasn't worth impacting the new digital key feature since it's more of a minor annoyance than anything else. I haven't actually tested this out, but it should also happen when you hold the phone close to the door handle since I assume that's also done with NFC.

I see. That makes perfect sense, is there no option to disable NFC on the iPhone? I haven't checked on my work phone since my personal one is Android. It sounds more like an Apple issue than a BMW one because a random NFC non-payment antenna should not activate a payment app. Perhaps Apple needs to add a way to disable NFC until you're in the app (Android can do this already) or fix the software so it doesn't activate their payment system if the NFC point isn't a payment terminal. I think there's fault on both sides unfortunately. Hopefully this gets fixed for everyone because I can see how it would be annoying.

I have the same problem and it agree it seems like it may be more of an Apple issue than a BMW one. BMW might be able to solve the issue by totally disabling the digital key--not sure that is a great outcome though. Seems like the iPhone needs to either learn to ignore that particular NFC signal or direct it to an app other than Apple Pay.

Given this could be an Apple problem, I'm less optimistic it gets fixes anytime soon. Though, I read someplace that IOS 12 was supposed to include a bunch of new NFC features.

Fingers crossed.

I’m surprised testing didn’t uncover this too. But there are a lot of bugs I’m finding with the new system and Apple devices.

MikeElmendorf and others experiencing issues with Apple iDevices: what version of iOS are your devices running? To mjchernis point, maybe recently-released iOS 12.0.1 addresses the NFC issues being experienced?

So iOS 12.x added support for third-party NFC app launching, which is likely needed to allow the ConnectedDrive app to open when placed into the charging cradle. I suspect that Apple released the update _after_ the charging cradle software was finished, and BMW is having to catch up with a release for iOS that launches the app via the NFC signal instead of the phone defaulting to Apple Pay since no alternative app is registered with the NFC ID.

My wife and I both have iPhones on iOS 12.1. Tried iPod Touch with iOS 11 and 10. Music replay is messed up on both of those, as well as my iPhone in iOS 12. All three doing the same weird things.

I think this is likely the problem... I installed one of the NFC readers off the app store and was able to read the tag in the cradle but can't seem to be prevent the phone from wanted to bring up Apple Pay.

I suspect BMW will need to release a version of the their app that somehow registers itself with the phone as the handler for that tag. Wonder if that means the phone will auto launch the BMW Connected App instead of Apple Pay. Probably better.

Lots of quirks with iPhone right now.. iDrive gets completely confused when playing music playlists in random order. Sometimes, it loses the names of the songs altogether and I see stuff like "~title 40" and it sometimes will play some group of songs over and over. Also, the center display does not match the song playing. Really odd. Coming off an F15 and while the tech is cooler to look at, it may take a few software updates to be as solid.
