There is no suitable engine nor any corroborating vehicle programs in the pipeline. So, it isn't happening anytime soon.

Strictly speaking, it is true that it could happen some day. But in my opinion, the writing is on the wall. M Division has decided not to invest in a high performance FWD/AWD ICE powertrain and vehicle chassis.

It is still possible that, come next generation, they will get on board with some type of hybrid setup. However, it seems plausible to me - and I'm speculating - that they will let it ride with the M2 coupe as the only small M vehicle until everything moves to a dedicated EV platform. Keep in mind, that could happen as soon as late next decade. The G42 2 Series will arrive in 2021 and exit in 2028. By 2028, a 450hp+, 300mile+ small high performance electric vehicle lineup might (Read: will) not just be a technical possibility, but might also be what everyone actually wants to drive by that time anyway.

Agree wholeheartedly. This is a defensive response. It's been clear from the introduction of the E82 1er (no sedan ) , the F22 2er (no sedan... grudgingly low M2 production for several years, no M convertible ) and now into this FWD variant that BMW really doesn't want to be in the small car market. While manufacturers always say they are responding to the market , this is a segment where BMW clearly tried to leave the segment, only to be dragged back in by the CLA and A3 selling handily for their competitors.

In doing so , they continue to take the Minimalist ( read: cheap ) route. If they unwittingly in this process move to the head of the pack in the segment , ala the X1.. it will be quite ironic.

I’ll save judgement until I see the actual car (this is just a render after all), but I’m already liking it. May consider it when it comes time to replace the M240

The design team at BMW is trying to hard. Please, minimize all the curves! Bloated Front end, and get back to a simple, classic BMW... less is more.

With that hood line they’d better go back to the drawing board!

Delaying My X2 M35i Purchase

I was thinking about the getting the higher-output X2 when it arrives. (I was impressed by the base X2 handling, it's just underpowered.) Now I will probably wait and see how the 2GC handles - in M35i trim of course.

BMW,

Just keep that 1 Series from Europe, the F20/F21 that uses a longitudinally-mounted engine and rear-wheel drive.
Make it sedan too if you want and you have a winner.

Or bring that hatch in North America because I know many that will buy it in RWD or AWD.

Stop playing around with this terrible jokes...

I want to give FWD the benefit of the doubt under the BMW brand but... it's soo haaard.

When I drove the X1, I literally got a headache.

Hmm for it to be a modern BMW M you need to make the lights even thinner and slap random non functional vents all over it.

While I very much agree, the problem is that everything is marketing driven.

Every niche has to be filled. After Audi started doing this, BMW followed suit.

I'm waiting for the 1.5, 2.5, 3.5. etc series.

I like a small car but also like a sedan (I like the coupe look better but as a one car family, the sedan works better for me). If BMW came out with a sedan version of its rear drive 2 series, I would be interested. But this...no!

Fail wheel drive? BMW has been making real wheel drive for the longest time and now they switched over to fail wheel drive i noticed this with the X1 models also. I don't know guys... with the way the MF and residuals are with lease rates these days.. something tells me to just buy out my 340i in the end.

Yeah I agree. odds are practical versions of evens which are sporty. Odds have sedans and Wagons. Evens have coupes and cabriolets.

But wait: you can also get a 4 door version of the two door version of a 4 door car if you get the odd numbered GC.

It's a naming scheme that makes no sense.

Even more of a joke is that the 2002 and the 2 series are 'the same line'.
