I'm reading a climate change novel at the moment. The one character who is staying out in a park in DC keeps running around telling everyone "No cotton next to your skin in these temperatures" Can anyone explain that?

Water is going to just fall out of the sky the next 4 days!!!!!

Cotton holds moisture (like sweat), and can basically form a barrier of water around your body, and pull heat from it.

But not enough to work like a wetsuit? Wool, and the new synthetic fibers, "wick away" the moisture? But only a select few of you are going out with a single layer, and the smart ones have an exterior layer to block the wind, correct? So where does the "wicked" water safely "collect"?

University classes were cancelled here and at UIUC today. I understand it's cold and you can get frostbite, but there are ways to avoid that. And the buildings are heated. Otherwise it's sunny here and the streets and sidewalks are clear. Easy walking. If it was 30F and snowing like crazy with slick streets and sidewalks, the classes would still be in session. Go figure.

its not so much collected as its not directly against your skin. the fibers of cotton are tight enough that it causes water to pool and will not pull it away from your skin, wool and other synthetics will actually pull it away from your skin.

Its splitting hairs though, the differences are not as exaggerated as some would have you believe.

This society has gone soft.
As a result we are cultivating a generation of "snow flakes" as Bill Maher calls them.
When I was in school in WI, we once got 16" of snow in a few hours. The school finally cancelled classes because the campus buses couldn't run. They said it was the first time they had to close in almost 100 years.
I was already in school, when they announced, so I walked home.

Was the walk uphill both ways?

I will admit that I am a snowflake when it comes to cold weather.

Here's the Maumee River here in OH. pretty crazy to see how much ice can get packed in and form some crazy pile ups from up river. I've been told that current still flows underneath

I was at UIUC one winter when the snowbanks were 6' high and the streets were skating rinks and they didn't cancel classes. My boss slipped trying climb over a snowbank and destroyed his knee. A coworker of mine slipped and fell and hit his head, suffering a concussion in the process. They really needed to cancel classes that day and didn't. Yet today, it's cold but tolerable if you wear the right clothes (which some students never do), and they cancelled classes. I have to think slipping and falling and/or car accidents are more of a reason to cancel classes than a little cold weather.

That said, I think the cold was a little over-hyped for this area. Chicago is brutal, but downstate we're above zero now and the wind isn't that bad.

they couldn't care less if you slipped and fell or had a car accident.
They cancelled classes because of liability. Everybody is so eager to sue nowadays.
