my car was parked in a heavy rain the other day. When my wife got in the car "passenger side" she goes "something is dripping from the top" i look up and half the headliner is wet and water dripping down. For a minute i thought i forgot to close my sunroof but no that was not the case. Today in the morning i checked again and headliner was dry. But i did schedule an appointment with bmw for Monday to see what the actual issue is. I have a feeling seal is not installed correctly.

So my question is, should i make them remove the headliner to see how much damage there is or just let them fix the seal ? First time for me so i am trying to figure out how far i should take this.

Thank you.

Will report back when i know more

What does you gut tell you?

It depends on what is behind the headliner. If its material that soaks up water and if not dried properly could lead to mold problems. When summer humidity hits and any moisture or dampness remains you will know if there is a problem from the smell. Dropping the headliner and thoroughly drying the area and pieces before re-installation would be the most prudent but it will cost you. Can you garage it and get a hairdryer or heat gun (be careful not to burn the headliner) and try to manually dry it out if the dealer won't do it or you don't want to pay for it. Than maybe a dehumidifer.

Believe me I don't want to cause you any alarm because I suspect leaving the sunroom happens many times on many cars with no problems. I'm just a little more cautious now when it comes to water every since my home flooded in Houston from Hurricane Harvey. Others may be better balanced then my advice.

The water is seeping in through the microphone, I doubt just getting the seal fixed will be an appropriate repair. If you have B&W then there's chances of water entering the ceiling speakers as well.

I'd have it removed to check the electrical for any issues because it might be fine now but have issues later

Check your sundoof drains... they tend to clog although your car is new, so not sure how...

Mine CPO 2014 F15 clogged just recently on the front passenger side and it leaked a bit from overhead pillar.

Even though I have CPO warranty, extended maintenance package - stealership wanted $1,315$+tax just to clean the drains and replace front passenger vapor barier - I declined and did it in local indy shop... VB was fine and did not need to be replaced.

Sunroof seal does not completely stop the water from getting in, look for two small holes on each side right in the corners - you will see them.
There are 4 drains - 2 front and 2 back, back ones come out of top of tailgate when you open it you will see.

Thats a tough call. I hate having anything taken apart as they never seem to be able to put it back together correctly without random rattles and shakes eventually appearing. However, if there was a lot of water up there, I'd probably be leaning towards having the headliner taken down - they might go ahead and do that anyway to troubleshoot or fix the problem...

Sorry to hear about this. What is your build date?

I would have the dealer look at it and resolve the issue.

They should, keep us posted! And ask for complete headliner replacement and blow some compressed air into sunroof drains. They may push for “outside influences/cause weather” and will ask you to pay - don’t, preasure them to fix everything up.

Also, it could be ice/ice forming that cloges the tubes with temperatures dropping fluctuating drastically.

its quite warm in NJ right now, doubt any ice was forming.

Thank you, i will see what they will find.

Makes sense!

With older models, I think BMW 5 series there were cases when drain tube would kink/twist somehow inside A pillar and water would overflow sunroof tray and spill into overhead trim - now this would be a design flaw! There was a class action and BMW settled with ~$500m settlement.

This sunroof leakage gave me a huge headache lol, I spent hours of researching

Also, check your floor carpet and if you can lift it up a bit right where the metal M sport logo is when you open the door and see if it got wet under it, there should be a soft foam/spongy mat about ~2" thick - or ask them to do it.

They should also dehumidify the car and dry everything up!

P.S. Check this thread:

Yes, it should be on BMW to correctly diagnose and properly resolve - to your satisfaction.

Exactly!!

This is why I am in a hold pattern at the moment. I love BMW rides but I want to reduce the time off work to be at bmw service centers.

Got more news from SA. My entire headliner soaked, and they found a culprit. The tube in the drain loops up instead of sitting straight and causes water to back up in the head liner. The tube is not sitting right so when it's cold the water freezes and gets backed up. There is an advanced bulletin out for it and it's not the first occurrence.

I had to open a case with bmwna and after several days I got a call from my dealer and it seems they are looking to replace my car. While I wait for the new one to be build they will let me use their loaner. Should I ask for anything else ? Does that seem like a decent deal ? What about my inconvenience?

Sounds like they are stepping up. A new ride is a good solution. Thanks for the follow up.

Wow. A replacement is what I would have wanted in your case. Hopefully they won't discount the value of your car based on the number of miles you put on it.
