Google Assistant

I have my X5 for a couple of months coming from a Q7. So far, I have not got Google assistant to work. So I played around with today and got a couple of surprises.

For it to work, I had to select my phone as the input. Long pressing the mic only worked with phone selected.
If I am playing Bluetooth music, Google respond plays over the music!
There is no way to cancel the BT music player. I killed it on the phone, but it still played the music.

My Audi did not have this issue. I did not have to select media and it paused whatever was playing until Google was done responding.

Am I doing something wrong?
I am running the 3/20 version of iDrive and tried rebooting.

I don't use android so can't help with your issue, but wouldn't you be better upgrading to 07/2020 and using android auto?

CarPlay integrates with idrive a lot better. Siri especially so with later Istep.

My google assistant integration is via CarPlay so wouldn't help you

Yes, I want to upgrade to 07/2020, however my dealer is not ready yet. They did not even know it was available for 2020 cars. I had to correct them.

When you say "live" do you mean OTA? The CD app says there are no remote updates. That is why I contacted the dealer.

OTA is scheduled from October. Dealers should have 07/2020.35 available now

While I am waiting for the 07/2020.35 update at my dealer, I decided to email BMW Genius. They sent the following directions and I am happy to report that it is now working perfectly! What ever media is selected will be muted until Google Assistant responds. Plus the response has it's own volume.

"I suggest uninstalling Google Assistant from your phone and reinstalling it. Once this has been completed, I suggest rebooting your Samsung Note 8.
I advise updating BMW Assist as troubleshooting by following the below steps:
• Via the iDrive "Apps"
• You will see a grey screen with the choice to either select Installed Apps or the BMW Store. Select neither option.
• Press the OPTION button near your iDrive controller.
• Select "Update Installed Apps and Services."
• After the update is complete, select "Close."
• Reboot the iDrive your vehicle by pressing and holding the mute (VOL) button for 70 seconds with the car on but parked.
