I would keep it at 21. Personally I liked the wheel style better and staggered looks make the car look aggressive, especially when lowered in sport mode.
Tread wall is your friend!

22s to me looked exaggerated in a 'look at me' way. Truth be told compared to my f15 x5 is on 20s my g05 x5 on 21s rides slightly harsher but that could also be the pirelli rft while the f15 on 20 is on Dunlop or maybe suspension related.
Anyhow had 19 inches in my 335 and hated the ride on broken roads in Glasgow despise changing to non rft and on xmas eve the non rft gave up after a pothole and i was royally stranded miles from home while rft may have got me home so my urge to go 22 was reined in. Part of me thinks i should have gone with the 20s as they look good too but msport plus pack automatically includes the 21s. |

Hi congrats on G05, I went with 20” for more economical reason in a long run($). The ride is smooth and quiet (no acoustic window setup) to me and I absolutely love it. I’ve heard ppl talking about the tire noise with 21” & 22”.

So I am thinking of ordering the 2021 X5 45e. I REALLY like the "Y" spoke (741) wheels. If all season's are a requirement (live in NJ), for an M-sport car, am i only left with 1 choice? the 20's?
For those of you with the 21's...any issues w/ bubbles/bent rims/etc? Aceman |

I think the 22's look the most natural, just because the wheel wells are so huge. Also, I find the 22 ride compliant and comfortable. Of course, I haven't driven in the 21s or 20s to compare, but it's not stiff by any stretch of the terms. In fact, I put the suspension in Sports Mode because Comfort is too "floaty."
In regards to being more susceptible to potholes or bent rims, here's a comparison of the sidewall thickness (section height): 20's: 275/45 = 124 mm (front and rear) (corrected) 21's: 275/40 = 110 mm (front), 315/35 = 110 mm (rear) 22's: 275/35 = 96 mm (front), 315/30 = 95 mm (rear) There’s a 0.5 inch difference in thickness between the sizes. Hold up your fingers and measure out that much difference. It's hardly anything and is about equal to the tread thickness of most tires. The only drawback as you go up in size is that the choice of tires goes down and the prices go up, but in my opinion 22's are worth it. Last edited by Frenetic; 08-16-2020 at 09:29 AM.. Reason: Tire-size correction. |

Do all Canadian deliveries get the M badge on the fender? I think it looks great and wish US cars came with it from the factory. Reminds me of the S line badge on Audi's, it's a nice subtle touch.

Love the shadow line contrast on white and also being a winter resident, I think the 20s just offers more convenience and options down in the long run.

With OEM sizing 275/40R21 + 315/35R21 there's 1 Pirelli SCORPION VERDE A/S but it is a mix rating for VOLVO front and Porsche N0 and I wouldn't recommend it. For me, was best combination of looks, versatility and ride quality. Came with Pirelli Scorpions A/S's. Have found them to be very good in all sorts of weather…including snow and ice.

Wondering how terrible the stock 22" Contis are during the winter? Our roads are plowed well and most are salted. Just a few days a year that you have to drive through snow.

Summer tires perform poorly even when it gets very cold not just snow. I lost grip and hit a guardrail with a tiny bit of ice, where cold was likely the bigger factor. Very scary.

The 22's are summer tires which shouldn't be driven on when the temps are below 40 degrees. Even on dry roads you can lose grip and slide around as if you were on ice.

In addition to losing grip, when it gets cold, the rubber on summer performance tires can get so hard, it literally chunks off under stress (like hitting a bump, stopping hard, or accelerating hard, or turning sharply).
Rubber used in tires generically gets harder from the day it is vulcanized, so even an all-season or winter tire becomes less effective as it ages, not only by the tread wearing down. IOW, what might (barely) work when brand new, may be disastrous the next year or later on. |
