I would have though a 5mm increase in tire sidewall top and bottom gives you 10mm overall. So how is calculator 14mm ? Scratching my head

The 30 and 35 there are NOT mm. They mean 30% and 35%, respectively, of the tread width of the tire (315mm in your example)

Ah ha - so that's it.

I've always thought it referred to the distance in mm from ground to rim.
