Is there any way to get these software upgrades over the air or can you only get major updates through the dealer?

Seems unfair if bmw keeps releasing updates to their software that only the dealer can put on there but won't because it costs them money wtf

Some have been OTA updated from 03/2019.xx to 11/2019.70 which is a big update.

Look in settings then check for update, it checks and tells you if one is available and also tells you your current version of istep.

I would download it via the Connected Drive phone App over WiFi at home first.

Then connect the phone to your car as normal (Bluetooth and WiFi) and it downloads from your phone into the car. Once its downloaded, find a safe place to park, then initiate the upgrade.

^^ This. What I did is just waited until I got home and parked the car in the garage. iDrive tells you the leave the keys in the car, so I did that. After that there's no input needed from you so you can go. I went inside and my connected drive app sent me a notification when it was all done. Very easy.

Imagine if Microsoft charged for every software patch they released for Windows 10?

If BMW want to treat their cars as "Platforms", then the cost of support for their car is surely covered under the "free" servicing agreements?

I have 4-years/80,000km "free servicing" on my car - so I expect the latest software releases after each service, especially considering how the car's features and safety systems are linked to software.
That is not the way that BMWNA looks at it. Getting an update is not covered under warranty work unless it fixes a specific issue. My understanding is that has always been the case with BNWNA. Now with OTAs it will probably be very difficult to get an update unless warranted except where a person has a good relationship with their dealer.

I just had this argument 2 weeks ago with my service rep.

He finally put me on the phone with the technician.

I was arguing that I wanted the rear A/C to work with seats folded. After a short discussion the tech said that they have to ask BMWNA to cover it under warranty for the dealer to be reimbursed.

He asked me if there was anything wrong with the car. I told him the rear A/C didn't work when the rear seat are folded down. Hi filed it as rear A/C not working. I got my upgrade.

For the next one I will just say Android Auto isn't working so I can go to 07/2020. This o e should have some interesting coding options unless the pushed them. Some of the settings for stop sign and traffic light detection required this version so hopefully the early adopters can code those.

Can someone look under the drivers assistance and safety features to see if there is any new boxes there?

That's OK, I dont mind getting it OTA, as long as I get it.

The way I see it, if my car is at the dealer for a service (oil change or whatever), what is the extra effort in just upgrading the car to the latest version of S/W in the background?

BMW seriously needs to become more Customer centric and take some pride in their work, rather than upgrade when their customers "plead and beg" (or make up BS) for an upgrade.
Back in the early 2000s, I had a Toyota Highlander - and the level of support and care at the Toyota service centre was amazing - 2nd to none.

Anyways, I'm on 11/2019.70 now which I got OTA 3-4 weeks ago.

It will be interesting to see in the next few months if 03/2020.xx comes through over OTA.

^ I totally agree with you. In my opinion updating iDrive to the latest version should just be part of the normal maintenance that is done when an oil change is performed. While in some cases it may take hours for the update in most cases it is fairly quick and the time should just be considered part of the paid maintenance.

J- they won't get the new features active such as TLA unless they have a 0720 build (MY2021).

I'm scheduled to get 07/2020.25 next week so I'll code TLA and Digital Key 1.5 and see what happens.

I'm not confident.

07/2020 should be delivered OTA from October all being well.

My guess is that they won't make that available for existing X5s and only MY21 and beyond will have it similar to ADV and PDC with braking intervention for the MY20s. They need to have some differentiation between MYs.

Will probably be able to enable it with coding.

Update:

1. My CarPlay is still disconnecting quite frequently. Unfortunately the shop foreman was probably correct when he said it was due to the phone being older (iPhone 7) and the recent update to iOS. The problem started after updating the iOS version, I think it was 13.4.1 but have upgraded since and still have the problem. Just ordered a new iPhone which hopefully will take care of the problem.

2. So far the Automatic window has not worked. I set up two different activation points and the window has not opened when reaching either. When I get some time I will do some more thorough testing.

Most probable path bending is available in 07/2020, but like most of the features, is only coded 'on' for MY2021.

I already have traffic light and road sign recognition (enabled by coding), but that is different to Traffic Light Assistant. The former displays stop/give way/red lights in the instrument cluster/hud, and slows the vehicle. TLA completely stops the vehicle at red Traffic Lights.

Can't wait for that, love my ASLA but that would complete it!
