I have sat in the back of an X7 and have an X5 with third row.
Simply - if you need the 7 seats all the time, get the X7. It is BIG, it is ugly (the rear doors are HUGE) but it has a "normal" third row - similar to the back seat of a hatchback. If you use the third row say 2/3 out of 10 then the third row if the X5 is absolutely FINE. You can move the 2nd row forward (as has been said above - this is the real plus of the option) and even collapse the middle section of the second row if you want more breathing space. Would I want to sit there for 10 hours - no. Have I taken 2 people in the third row for a 4 hour drive - yes and they survived!! |

This situation with 3rd row is really pathetic (I mean seriously is it so complicated to make seats?), and like the poster before said, prospective buyer would consider Q7, we personally have until Dec to make a decision, and 3rd row is a deal-breaker for my wife for those occasional trips with kids and grandparents. Q7 would have to be likely option (after 3 BMWs).

Actually for me the problem is the midle row. The room is very short there. 3rd row seats are OK for me (i mean for my children of 11-9-7). The position is higher than the mid row, which is great because the 11 year old can have a look out over the second row and see the rest of the family. The problem is, that having proper leg room in the 3rd, I need to push the mid row to the front and the mid row gets to narrow, so even the 7 year old is constantly hitting my seat with his leg. I used to have a 3GT before. They had no chance to reach my seat there and that car is much shorter...
Thats a piti. Otherwise getting into the seat for the children and having a longer jurney in the third row is acceptable acutally. Getting adults into there is something I would not do, but thats a different usecase anyway. The problem is that havig the children back is still challanging to get adults into the mid row... Other issue is that blody slow motor that moves the seats. Children are not good waiting for it... That results that the process is blocked and at the end, my seat (front left) remains in a lean forward position... T. Quote:

this is not the perfect 7 seater, but it drives is so much better than Mercedes GLE and Audi Q7 that I can live with these minor nuances... 7 seats are only used occasionally but the car is so much fun to drive every single day.... |

Have 2020 w/3rd row on order
It's scheduled for production this week (Week 32) with completion date of 8/4/19. Have a VIN and the BMW USA website shows as "production begins". Hope to have it at the dealer by end of August.
Will keep everyone informed. Don't need the 3rd row very often, but like the functionality and comfort of the power slide/reclining second row |

My take - 3rd row in BMW X5 is absolutely fine for ***occasional trips with adults, or full time with kids. Also I don’t understand why everyone keep talking about 2nd row - it’s also fairly roomy and convenient, especially when come adjustable with 3rd row added. And getting in is so much more convenient than trying to manually fold Q7 2nd row and grasping on their weird “impossibly to grab” handle to flip the seat making the way to 3rd row.

Dealer confirmed they have a 2020 X5 on order with 3rd row that they expect to receive in the next week or so. I didn't know/expect the 2020s to be arriving so soon. Glad to hear the 3rd row is an option though.

Because the guy you talked to has no idea of ordering cars. Check with a true salesman, or check with another dealer. There will be someone who does want your business.

Any chance you can keep this post updated if/when you confirm your dealer has a MY2020 on site in inventory?

Mine has been built and is at VPC
My 2020 with 3rd row has completed production and is awaiting carrier transport at the Vehicle Processing Center (VPC) according to my salesman.
Hope to have it by end of August. So to the poster above who said his salesperson couldn't order a 2020 with 3rd row, I would suggest you find another salesperson, or another dealer. |

That's awesome. An you take s picture, I want to assess how much luggage room I am losing in the trunk. Currently, we put our ski boots etc. down in there and worried about the 3rd row capacity constraint for 4 people.
