Just depends on the temp. Generally one uses max AC when it is far below the set, like when they just are starting. In that case the engine will not shut down. If for some reason one is using Max and it is below the set temp then it may shut down.

Right- sadly I use max ac many times during a drive.

Do newer models use an electric motor driven a/c compressor instead of serpentine belt driven so that a/c can remain on (for short intervals) while the engine is stopped?

It's strange but Bimmercode says "unable to code" when I try to code ASS to off. It works on all the other things I have used to code, but not on the most annoying "feature" of this car.

Any ideas guys?

it's been a while since I coded it off but I seem to recall Bimmercode telling me I had to put the car in diagnostic mode, or something along those lines, by quickly pressing the Start button three times in a row. Did you get that message? Before doing that, it would not code either anything or certain features, can't remember now.

Interesting… I have not seen such a message. I'll have to try it out though. I have done all coding with the car idling. Does diagnostic mode mean it's in accessory mode (engine off) while you code?

I wish my experience was more recent so I could answer your questions but I do know that I have never coded with the engine running as I always did it in my garage with the garage doors closed. The coding setup I have may have determined the protocol it required and yours may be different. I use Bimmercode with an ethernet adapter like in these pix. What I recall is connecting it all up and then getting that message on how to put the car is diagnostic mode as Bimmercode could not connect to all modules.

Here is a video I just found on YT that basically shows what I recall even though this guy is not using Bimmercode. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mUYfhsde6GU

You don't want to code it while it is running. Should be no need to put it into Diagnostics mode anymore, although out of habit I usually do, since it will do that when you connect.

Putting the PHEVs and EVs aside, not that I know of.

Hey TB, when did the change happen to not engage diag mode? My last coding was in April/May timeframe and I needed to do it then. While its certainly easy to do, it would be good if that requirement went away. I'm on Bimmercode 4.1 (12440)-14.7.1

At last three years ago. I think I noticed it right after I started coding so it could have been before that. I just hit connect and it automatically goes into diagnostics mode.

Edit: It could be that even though it happens automatically it should be done manually. The instructions say to do it.

When I have some time later I will go out and try it just to make sure I'm not imagining things. Like I said, I usually hit it but have not always done so.

I'm thinking of doing the same cause maybe I read the statement it displayed and therefore obeyed orders when in fact I didn't have to. Not that it really matters but when trying to troubleshoot something, the details count so I will also try it.
What connection method do you use?

Bluetooth adapter, OBDLink MX+, with an iPad.

Ok, here is what I just did. One thing I didn't mention earlier is that I have the upgraded Full version of BimmerCode in case that makes a difference in which modules in the car you can access and/or change.

Plugged my Ethernet OBD reader into the OBD port and the other end into my Ethernet to Lightning adapter and then plugged the adapter into my iPhone

1. Brought up the BimmerCode app on my phone and pressed Connect

2. Got a connection error and pressed the Open manual option

3. The manual for connecting via Ethernet tells me to press the cars Start button 3 times, which I then did and in a couple of seconds my dash display showed Diagnostic Mode active in white letters at the middle bottom of it. (This pic is out of order)

4. Started over by going back to BimmerCode and pressing Connect

5. After BimmerCode finished reading all the modules, it opened to the page you see in pic 5, showing the various modules it found in the car. Here you can see the Engine Centrol Unit which is the one you want for coding ASS

6. Selecting the Engine Control Unit brings you to the next page showing what features you have some control over. You can see on mine that I have both ASS features turned off (inactive).

That how I disabled ASS full time no matter what mode I start my car in or put it in while driving.

Just tested mine and it automatically goes into Diagnostic mode as soon as I hit the Connect button. I would guess the difference is due to the adapter.

Yeah, must be that we're using different OBD adapters. Thanks for verifying.

Sometimes I wish I had gone bimmercode vs bimmerutility. With the phone you can code anywhere for 75 bucks, I paid over 125 for a licence and need to drag around a laptop etc... Honestly BimmerCode is the way to go. And the cheat codes are super easy, click enable done ...
