It technically will work, but to use a larger EVSE than circuit support, this itself is a code violation. If there is an inspection, it won't pass it. It is for a good reason.

The good reason is, if for any reason, the car's setting is reset, it become very dangerous. This happened to a coworker's Model S. Current limit is reset by OTA update. Fire started that night at 1am when everyone is sleeping. Another possible scenario is if a friend with EV come over and need top off, they can potential draw 40A as well.

It is possible that the various adapter cables used for the new EVSE correctly program the EVSE to an appropriate maximum value...there appears to be more pins in the cable than would be required for simple power and ground. But, yes, plugging in a device that can draw more power than the circuit can support should not be done...there's a good reason that this sort of device is limited to 80% of the circuit's maximum theoretical (short-term) limits.

Appreciate the replies, lots of arm chair electricians here. I will update when I have the car and charger. If BMW sells a 14-30 adapter then there should be a setting to limit the charge to 24A.
I'm not super concerned about the setting changing via OTA/Act of God, if everything works as it should the circuit breaker will trip well before any fire hazard. In the rare event it doesn't, I have insurance for those rare events. But I appreciate all the replies.

for U.S. vehicles:
level 1 = 110/120V
level 2 = 240V

So the adapter that I need is to plug the fast charger to a 240V circuit on the wall? NEMA 14-50?

Is it possible to use a regular outlet with a 240V circuit? so I don't have to get the adapter? Or the 240V circuits have to use the NEMA 14-50?

YOU HAVE TO USE NEMA 14-50 outlets with 208/240V 50 amps rated circuits! 120V outlets are not designed to handle the voltage that is twice as high and they definitely can't handle 50 amps of the NEMA 14-50 spec. Never mix level 1 and level 2 outlets as you asking for a thermal event, aka fire!

The above comment, absolutely. If you start a thermal event due to a purposed NEC code violation, I am not sure insurance will be on your side.

The key is, if you already have wiring setup for 240V 50A (6AWG wire), replacing that outlet is like $20. If you don't have proper wiring setup, the plug doesn't mean much.

if you want to charge at level 2, you’ll need that adapter and a 240V circuit with a NEMA 14-50 outlet to plug the adapter into

outlets are “windows” to the respective voltages that power them. it’s like that for safety reasons, e.g. standard electric code. if someone installed a common household outlet (NEMA 5-15) on a 240V circuit, some unsuspecting person will come along, see that outlet and plug in their phone charger… BOOM! 💥 so to answer your question, that’s a NO because it’s a code violation

it may do some good to read up a little about EV charging, the different levels, etc, so you understand what’s involved. if you still have questions, can always look it up here or consult a qualified electrician

I got the NEMA 14-50 adapter for the BMW Flexible fast charger off of eBay. its brand new, they wanted Buy Now 120 or "make an offer" I offered 95 bucks and they accepted. BMW #61905A13A61. Should be here Thursday, I guess I'll find out if I got took or not. Looks like they may have another one to sell as well.

That’s only 68% of the net capacity (29.5 kWh) while 45e actually has it at 71%! Unbelievable! Hauling all this extra weight and not being able to use over 30% of it!

Level 3

Somebody knows if we can charge the X5 2024 with a level 3 charger? Does the car supports it?

FWIW, while some call a CCS (DC fast charge) level 3, that is not how it is described in the specifications. No, the X5 PHEVs do NOT support CCS charging, only ACV charging using 12/240vac.

Europe called the different types differently than what we do in the USA, so it can get confusing when a forum is international.

Yes that is the seller. The one I ordered got delivered today so one day early and is brand new in the sealed plastic bag. I offered 95 bucks and it was accepted immediately so I think you could offer maybe even a little less and see.
I was going to buy it at BMWNorthwest when I pick me car up since that is my dealer and supposedly they will give you 10% off any accessories you purchase on delivery day. I was also going to argue for it to be "thrown in" with the sale, but they haven't been to interested in any negotiations so I just said screw it I'll get my accessories some place else.

Is it me to think you guys are nuts for buying something like that 3rd party? You’re saving 50 bucks. Is it really worth the risk?

Why did you ditch the flexible fast charger?

It is a BMW part. Look at the picture. Factory PN and packaging. Why not?
