Car Turns Off When I open the Driver's Side Door..... MAKE IT STOP

Hey,

I have a 2023 X5 E45

I don't want the car turning off until I hit the "off" button.

I have my wife and kid in the car and I need to hop out to pick up food or dry cleaning or whatever. But the moment I open the door, the car shuts off the engine and shuts off the A/C.

I don't want it turning off just because I open the door - I don't want it turning off at all. And I even found a check box in settings that's supposed to stop it from shutting off when I open the door but that doesn't seem to work.

BTW - I drive exclusively in Sports Mode.

Any advice?

Great question! I can’t figure it out either. It happens to mine as well 😩. (M60!) The only solution I have found so far is the following… When I leave the car, there is a screen pops up called precondition or something, my wife would press that and car along with AC would turn on without driver being there.

Two known method

1. Buckle driver seat belt behind you, then open door
2. In hybrid mode, hold brake firmly, tap gas paddle. Ice will turn on. Once ice is on, you can open door.

I know it sucks that we have to do such steps. I personally think bmw messed up here. You will hear true bmw fanboys tell you this is better. Bmw does it for your safety 😂

The logic is to prevent the vehicle accidentally running over you if you leave it while it's running. You'll notice that you can open the door with your seatbelt on, as it's much harder to fall out with your belt on. So, you have to fool the vehicle that you're still in it, and buckled.

If you use this trick, be absolutely, positively sure the vehicle is in Park. It's a very smart car but not smart enough to override some of the dumb stuff we can do.

For something like this I always have seat buckle clip (use it as well during nature excursions at speeds < 15 mph).

Here something similar to give you the idea:
https://www.amazon.com/DYOG-Accessor...%2C193&sr=8-58

But as it had been mentioned, be aware on how to use it. Not be used to avoid seatbelt.

NOTE: the vehicle will always shut off despite this setting being checked or unchecked. it confuses many because of the wording. despite it saying vehicle, that setting actually refers to the electronics. if unchecked, accessories such as iDrive, radio, etc will remain on upon opening the driver's door. if checked, these accessories will turn off upon opening the driver's door.

SO before you open the door, press the Start/Stop button to end your trip. a couple choices should pop up on your infotainment screen. select precondition now. open the door and leave. CAVEAT: you must have adequate HV battery charge to do this. if not, then refer to the aforementioned workarounds.

Use the "condition now" option [mine pops up on iDrive screen when you get out of the 45e ... it'll keep AC running (even if you lock the doors) until you return.

BTW - WHY SPORT MODE 100% of the time? Maybe buying a PHEV was not the choice for you?

Except there is a Park Button for this purpose.

It's not bad advice but the 'trick' only changes things to work like nearly every other vehicle that's ever been made, and the vehicle will put itself into Park as soon as you open the door anyway.

X5 50e owner here. While I don't have a solution - I'll share my experience regarding this issue. My 2013 Audi had the same "feature". I asked my dealer to turn this off and I was told that this is a safety feature and can't be turned off. My reason for asking that was that the ICE engine would shut down and along with it the heating/cooling and it was an annoyance.
Fast forward 10 years and now I also have a Volvo c40 which is full electric. First time I sat in it - I couldn't find the on/off push button, to be told that the car has none ! You just walk in, the car switches on including the climate. The motor doesn't starts even when you engage the drive or reverse. Its only when you release the brake that the motor get energized. You put it in park and just walk away and it shuts down. Took me couple of days to get adjusted to the new paradigm
X5 PHEV falls in the middle I think. When you push the start button, it starts on battery including the climate I think, ICE doesnt starts unless you push some button on the drive to make it start while its in parking. For the same safety reasons and also to conserve the battery it shuts down the car if the driver exits the car. Its still an annoyance to "push" the button to start but its not like it kick in the ICE engine for anything. I have not tried it yet but you can start the climate using the phone app while the car is parked if that's the only reason to not have the car shut down.

#2 not work if car is in park as ar as my own experience. #1 is no different then any other car, including 40i. You can always open door when car is running forward and jump out and kill yourself.

There are plenty of better way to prevent the stupidity of needed. BMW’s chosen way is probably not the most smart, and maybe that why no one else does it.

I have had this same problem on my M60i. I think leaving the key fob in the car keeps it cranked.

Maybe true for 60i, but definitely not 45e. As soon as door is open when car is station and drive belt unbuckled, car is off. The drive is still in the seat.

I am finishing a 4 day road trip to south CA, Los Angeles, Burbank, universal city, with one toddler a s one infant. There are soooo many usage cases where I need to open the door after the car is on, miltiple encounters every day. It is such a stupid implementation.

Just buy an M50i or pre 48 volt X5 and turn off ASS (by button - remember them) and magically the engine continues running.

Unless you inadvertently have the car in neutral.

Is this only in the newer or specific models? We have a 19' 40i and dont have this issue. I leave the car running for the kids and wife all the time while i run to pick something up. It does shut off after 15 or 20 mins

I've noticed this as well, but I rarely need to do as the OP (no small children) so I've not let it bother me.

I think I have a solution though... after you open the door, before you exit, start the car.

It won’t work. With door open, foot in brake, you can start the 45e, yes. But as soon as food off brake, car turns it self off. I have tried many combination of things
