HeliCoil Wheel Hub

So my local tyre shop threaded one of the wheel bolts plus the hub and BMW Hornsby recommend that the entire hub be replaced at a cost of $1,200aud which I am ok with.

I went to my tyre shop who threaded the bolt for the rear tyre and he said they will pay for it to be helicoil repaired. The dealer laughed and completely disagreed saying it is a huge safety concern to helicoil a 315/23 tyre with a near 600hp car and should under no circumstance be done.

Spoke to the tyre shop and he doesn't agree and is reluctant to pay for the repair as he can do it for $150.

Whats everyones thoughts.

Helicoils have been around a long time and are actually pretty solid although I don't know about their usage on hubs. That said, I wouldn't accept it. I'd want him to pay for a hub install at a dealership or reputable indy that uses official BMW parts and warranties his work. I'd then give the tire guy the old one and tell him he's free to fix it and sell it on eBay to recoup whatever he can.

how badly are the hub threads damaged? i cross threaded the wheel bolt on my F34 with an impact wrench and it proceeded to mangle the threads on every bolt i tried on it
i got an M14x 1.25 tap and chased the threads, it did not take alot of force, 1/4 of a turn with very little pressure on a wrench and it threaded cleanly. as best as i can tell i mangled the initial thread and the hub is much harder than the bolts.

if its mangled enough that it cant be simply chased, i would insist on the hub replacment.
especially if you can get the bmw dealer to put in writing the helicoil is not an acceptable repair.
