Side Skirt Protector
Hi there... Newbie here.
Just got an x5 m sport package in black and i'm afraid that the m sport side skirt will get scratched from older or shorter passengers getting in and out of the car and mistakenly step on the side skirt. Do you guys use some sort of black or clear adhesive tape to prevent if from getting scratched? Thanks in advance. |

I had the same concern but decided it wasn't worth worrying about. It's just a vehicle. Drive it and enjoy it. It's not a collectible classic.

thanks. I've never done a PPF before (had to google what it meant So the clear film is tough enough to prevent scratches? Nice... thanks. How about a DIY protection sticker? Any of you guys use them? |

If you are concerned about it get some pre-cut ppf or buy a sheet. Ppf on the side skirt would be an easy, IMO, job. Just make sure you fully wrap the skirt because that is a high wear area not just from entry/egress but from road debris. Myself, I ceramic coated and will keep an eye on it but I am also coming from an X3 where I didn't have to worry about the higher step in. We will see how the skirt on the X5 wears.

FYI, my previous X3m40i's had the same lower skirts but they were a lower step in/out. I didn't have a issue with rock chips or passenger wear and tear, it was actually door dings and chips higher up on the slanted lower parts of the doors. I have noticed though with my new X5 I roll/slide my calf on the side skirt while exiting. I ceramic coated the vehicle and time will tell if that will have an impact.

This is a great and timely post for me. My little guy has reached a point where he is adamant that he clomb in the car on his own, but he's WAY too small to make it in without climbing on the side skirts.
Are there pre cut kits available, or should I expect to lay it down and DIY cut it? |

I did my side skirts to protect from stone chips and because the passenger side skirt was always getting kicked. It is a very easy DIY. I just went to a local detailer and bought a strip of PPF for $40. As I am not practiced in the art of cutting around the PPF, I just held a piece of paper to the skirt and cut out a pattern - which I used to cut the PPF. Good protection, cheap, fast and easy. You can't even tell it is there.
