You can check the Diesel prices for M Sport base model differences in the Luxembourg configurator. The price increase over 30d is quite significant (see attachment).

The base M Sport 30d in the UK is £61,140 and the 50d is £72,085. Whilst the 50d is an M lite model, it does loose one expensive option which is the air suspension (iirc). I imagine the 40d would have this so would expect the price to be slap bang in the middle at around £66,500. I'd be very surprised if it was only £2k more as it would make the 30d redundant and despite everything that will remain the best selling model in our market |

Base will be higher than that. I'm sorry there's no chance it will only be a £2k difference. Dealer is 2nd guessing it, there's no official pricing as of yet and as I said, £63k base for a 40d would mean 30d would not sell at all. It would be £46 a month difference in real life in terms of payments

Hard to justify the 30d if the 40d has 100 BHPs more, much less fuel consumption, and just a 'token' (given the price of the vehicule) price increase.
Given the spec, I know very well which car I would buy! I *knew* my next car (after this one) would be at least mild-hybrid, but it came quite a bit quicker than I expected.

I think the moral of the story is to wait a year or two after a new series comes out, as BMW seem to "drip-feed" the release of their models and engines. They come out with what they think will be volume models, then the niche versions (and engines) later. The dealer told me back in late 2018/early 2019 that there wouldn't be a 40d (equivalent to the F15), as the 40i satisfied that middle ground high performance category, but seems he was full of BS. Like you, my next car will be Electric or at a Hybrid/Electric. I'm looking at keeping my 30d for around 10 years, and hopefully Hydrogen fuel-cell technology will have matured by then too. BMW are supposed to be big in that technology. |

But again, considering some EU markets have announced pricing for the 40d and its around €8k more, I just don't see how the price difference in the uk will be less than a third of that. Like I said, £6k more sounds about right and in line with other BMW engine jumps. Plus at that price it creates a market for all 3 diesel models. |

Not exactly, a mild hybrid has a smaller electric motor which can only assist the in car engine but not move the vehicle by itself. I believe it is usually also used as starter motor.
Basically, delivers something like 10HP and allows you to coast with the in car engine off, and assists when you take off to overcome the intertia of the vehicle in a smoother way. I guess a real hybrid (plug-in or otherwise) has an electric motor capable of moving the vehicle independently for at least some distance. |
