Question for the OP. When did you set up the pick up date and how did the process go? Ours just entered production today and we're curious how the process works. Email? Phone call? From someone at the Performance Delivery Center I presume? How far along was the car when you set it up?

Yes, I totally get it -- and that's why I'll probably get the X5 despite my bonehead dealer. But I must say, once you drive either the Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT or Trackhawk, the turbo-lag on the X5 is incredibly annoying. The Jeeps feel much more responsive in day-to-day driving, which makes them feel faster, and, well, they actually are faster. Makes me think of something about an 'ultimate driving machine' or something!

Just ask your dealer to set it up. If you have a non-butthead dealer unlike mine, it should be no problem. Then you get an email from the "BMW Performance Center Delivery -- The Ultimate Delivery Experience™" with all the details. You get there the night before, they pick you up at the airport, take you to a first class hotel, get a first class dinner, then a first class breakfast in the morning, then an entire VIP day long tour of the factory, training at the racetrack with a professional driving instructor, and delivery of your ride where they go over every single feature -- presumably by people who actually know what-the-heck they're talking about! Sounds like it might be pretty cool.

The dealer set it up and we read about how it works once we get there (seems like an awesome experience). My question is when in the process did you get that email?

I had to ask my dealer over and over to get him to actually do it, but here's a mini-timeline:

12/10/18 - placed order (and told dealer I want to pick up in SC)

01/07/19 - Production Begins (reminded dealer about SC)

01/11/19 - got email with the details.

My dealer had never done this before, and it was clear I was causing him more work that he didn't want to do since I am only spending a pesky little $100K.

Thanks! We are anxiously awaiting that email!

Seems odd your dealer wouldn't have done it before. Hope everything gets straightened out for your pesky little $100K!

Wow that looks great! I haven't seen that color in person, nor did I ever see Coffee leather in person, I've just been relying on online pictures. That is one of the best shots of this color I've seen. Hope mine looks just as good!

01/17/2019 - It seems like they worked on it overnight -- it went thru "Assembly in progress" and is now on "Quality Check".

The next step will be 'final assembly' and then 'ready for transport', but since I'm picking it up, that should mean it's all done. We'll see...

I've got to figure they must get 400+ cars a day through the line.

The colour surprised me, as i was expecting to be disappointed as i really liked the space grey on my old F15 40D. But, arctic grey is a really bright metallic dark grey, looks modern and a bit unusual, and a nice half-way between space grey and black.

Actually reminds me of Carbon Black. Made me think of this crazy guy who spent days doing an epic detailing, which then looks spectacular...

I’ve combed the internet looking for good artic grey X5 pics and these are the best I’ve seen by far.. You have really calmed my nerves. Like you I was expecting to be disappointed but these pics makes me think I made the right decision. I ended up with 21’s because of these New York streets but damn the 22’s are so nice.

happy to help! i put my order in with the dealer the day the X5 was released for ordering - i was quite keen! picked up the car late december and was also trying to find pics to see what the colour was like - the ones i found, have to say, i thought i'd made a mistake and should have gone for phytonic blue. but when i picked up the car, i was really pleased with the colour, and still am - phew

i've always been a fan of big wheels so when the dealer mentioned there are 22s i had to have them!! but, 21s are fine too (the largest wheels on the old F15 i think), and the designs are really smart.

i'm a tax accountant, so my friends are laughing at me for picking boring grey ... but i think it looks great so stuff them!!

Looks fantastic. I was unsure about AG and thought it might be boring, but in the metal it's a much more interesting colour. Definite blue tones that really set it apart from BMW's other greys.

I really need to take some more photos of mine now that I've had the ceramic coating done.

Very beautiful!

I would definitely go for a black grill (and if possible, black tailpipe exhaust tips..

that would be superb and in line with the wheels and the bars on the roof

that's exactly what i've ordered from IND - grill, tips, and roundels in black - i think that will look great without being "too much" - i've modded a few cars in the past and looked at the final position and regretted going too far, but this is my first grown-up car so i need to act my age now (i'm told)

UPDATE 1/18/2019 -- jumped through a few stages just now:
  • Final assembly
  • Ready for transport
  • Awaiting carrier assignment
Since I'm all scheduled to pick it up at the factory in SC, they damn well better NOT ship it cross country!
