Next major will be 03/2020.xx and will likely start to show up in April 2020 onwards. BMW releases major versions on 03/, 07/, and 11/ schedule. Minor versions on 11/2019.xx can still have significant changes, particularly bug fixes and bug introductions.

In any formal or even slightly informed sense, no one knows what is coming or even what is in current versions of iDrive software, not even BMW.

I initially suggested extending the Driving Recorder for me as compensation, but they replied and said its not a free service and you will need to pay. Fair enough.

But I then replied and asked how they are going to compensate me for a feature that I've paid for as part of the car's purchase and doesn't work.

Yet to hear back from them...

We have Consumer Laws for situations where a business promises something, but their product doesn't deliver - so I'll be throwing that at them next if they don't play ball...

How are people getting dealers to do the software upgrade? Is it just happening as part of other scheduled service? Can you make up something to get them to do it? I'd really like the 11/2019 version on my M50i but don't quite have a reason to take it in. Service dept says "car will tell you when you need an upgrade" which everyone knows isn't true. Any ideas are greatly appreciated.

Great news, BMW AG agreed to extend my Drive Recorder subscription for 3-years free of charge as compensation for not supporting Remote S/W upgrades. I think that's fair.

Dealers should do it as part of the routine service or vehicle check service.

You shouldn't need an "excuse" to get the S/W upgrade. In fact, the Service Manager at my dealer told me BMW gives them 10 business days to commence upgrading vehicles to the latest software for that model, else they get reprimanded.

Oh yeah, when I asked what I would get to compensate for CarPlay sucking butt in the beginning of 2019, BMW was not very receptive to even extending it for the time it was down.


Edit: Curious if anyone has seen/heard of any xx.2020 updates yet? Everything seems to be working on 11/2019, but wonder if a new update might open some features (drive recorder, etc). I had the weirdest thing happen last night though, my ambient lighting kept flashing like there was an alert...checked everything and nothing came back. Ended up doing a reset and it came back fine.

Sure you haven't got "active" lighting enabled?
In the ambient lighting settings there's something called "active lighting" which makes the ambient lighting flash under certain circumstances...

The ambient light on the driver door flashes white orange when I open it (at stand still) with the car "active" in my 45e. I have it set at bleu and dynamic. Maybe to warn the driver the car is still on because you don't hear it in electric? If it was to warn rear coming traffic they might as well turn it on on every opening of the door.

I use Orange to get that classic BMW feel, but switch back and forth between Blue. This was a strange lighting thing, since I checked iDrive for errors, checked for a phone call, and had my seatbelt on without and dash pop ups. I'll blame it on the gremlin that lives under the hood.

New major releases come out in 03, 07 and 11 so we won't see 03/2020.xx until the March/April timeframe.

Drive recorder has been available since 07/2019. It's a connected drive subscription option as retrofit. Some markets have it, some are getting it. Not sure about USA. You'll need the parking plus pack I believe.

I'll see if I can spot anything in the latest psdzdata thats scheduled for 03/2020

A few bits and bats, nothing mega interesting but that could change I guess.

07/2020 looks to have some really cool stuff scheduled- traffic light recognition, more advanced stop/give-way recognition, undertake prevention, emergency lane during congestion, urban cruise control, new version of TJA....

What I have noticed is that the new Launcher Pro mappings are completely different to esysx. Both the code names and descriptions are totally different. Looks to me like esysx are accurate and the LP mappings are just plain wrong!
