Marketing/customer expectations would be my guess. Likely no technical reason given the modern oils.

Having it yearly doesn't benefit BMW though in fact for the first three years they pay for it (obviously it must be baked into the cost someplace) and many other competitors do not.

They don't pay for any service in the UK, the fact they pay for it in the US makes it even less logical for it to be yearly in US and 2 yearly in UK.
My logic would say the manufacturer decides what is the best service interval for a specific car, still can't understand why half the time in US compared to UK!.

Many owners in the US still change their oil at 5k miles or less no matter what the manufacturers or oil testing say. You would never get them to go with every two years even though technically it should be fine. BMW likely chooses an interval that better fits into the mindset of consumers.

Look at the US legal environment compared to the UK. My guess is the lawyers had influence, and not a small amount.

Got an email saying it's time to schedule service, but nothing in the actual car and/or the mobile app. I find that odd. I can now see my scheduled appointment in the app, but no alert/notification that it was time to schedule.

What does it say for the Services in iDrive? They should be listed with the due date/remaining mileages.

I think dealers are trying to increase their revenue from service since sales revenue is expected to be decreasing.

Ughhh. Should have cancelled my apt after reading your response TurtleBoy Took car in only to be told nothing needs to be done yet. Going to have a small dent removed by the PDR guy or it would have been a total waste of time. BMW really shouldn’t be sending “time to schedule your 1st service apt” emails. I forwarded it to my CA.

They did put me in a new x7 and immediately made me appreciate the V8 in my M60i. For those of you that don’t know: TurtleBoy knows all and never doubt him!

Thanks man

Perhaps a silly question:

Is there a difference in performance between toggling the gear shifter to “S” on the D/S setting vs hitting the actual sport button in the cluster (comfort, eco, sport)?

If the end result is the same, does it do anything (or is it even possible) to do both?

Sorry, had to ask.

Not silly at all. When you use the S on the gear selection it is putting the transmission in S Sport mode. When you use the Sport DDC it changes the driving dynamics to Sport mode. Those would include, steering, damping, throttle, transmission etc. Many folks report that the transmission in Sport mode is much sportier in S Sport mode and is not very good for daily driving.
