Love this as a tow vehicle after replacing the F150 with the '21 xdrive40i. Only complaint, even though it's small, is that my locking hitch pin interferes with the safety chain eyelet. I have to perfectly position the lock to get the key in to unlock it. Not a huge deal, but I have to make sure the lock is on the right way to access through the eyelet, or I'd be screwed.

Twin Axle Swift Caravan weighing 1800kg / 3968lbs. Tows very nicely. Stable and plenty of power from the 50e.

Also tow a small 750kg / 1653lbs unbraked box trailer most weekends with my sons motorbike in it which it makes very light work of

The Casita weighs a bit over 3k lbs loaded. I carry some gear in the back of the X5, too. My passenger (pictured) weighs 15 lbs, pretty manageable. I do need to measure the axles sometime, now that I've got all the weight distributed how I like, but I doubt I'm that close to the tongue weight limit.

I've gone on some terrible roads by now. Didn't get stuck in the turnaround for my dispersed-site cove on the Colorado River (loose rock, and sandy). I'm really impressed with this vehicle!

I'm buying an x5 50e and will be towing a 4000 pound dual axel travel trailer. I've always used weight distribution anti sway bars when towing with my Jeep grand cherokee. I read somewhere that bmw does not recommend the use of sway bars. What's everyone using (or not using)? any issues traveling 70 mph with a 4000 pound trailer?

I use an anti-sway bar, only. You're a little heavier than my rig, so you could choose to be one of those who disregards the prohibition. But I figure there has to be a reason they allow WDH with the X7 but not the X5, right?

edited to add: I used to have a limit of about 68mph, but then I upped the speed rating on my trailer tires, and I'll go as high as about 72 or 73 now.

This gets beat around a lot.. BMW says do not use WDH on a current X5. Keep the tongue weight within limits. If you do that, the OEM trailer stability logic should work fine.

It applies the brakes as soon as oscillating yaw motion is detected. I haven't experienced it yet. In my previous vehicle, the one and only time the anti-sway bar saved me from a bad gust was getting across Wyoming. Wyoming takes windy to a whole other level.

I use BlueOx WDH hitch with antii-sway build in.

I personally will not tow without WDH

single axle @4300 lbs airstream 22 feet

I keep the speed around 68mph and works good.

The vehicle has accelerometers, tilt sensor, and the computer also knows which way and how much you turn the steering wheel. Add all of that together, and the computer can help with the stability. To transfer weight to the front axle, a WDH applies torque to the chassis. BMW says their chassis is not designed for that, so if you were to have any long-term issues, they would not be responsible. One big reason to use a WDH is to get the vehicle to ride at the proper height, but with the 50e and the air suspension, it will ride evenly as long as it is loaded within specs. When a trailer causes the chassis to sag in the rear, unloading the front, it becomes unstable. I would not use a WDH on a vehicle that says not to…your choice to ignore that, but should you have an issue, it could bring up all sorts of legal issues.

I'll be getting my ordered x5 50e by the end of April( I hope). I ordered the OEM trailer hitch with it and will be pulling my trailer without using a weight distribution hitch. I hope you're right and it works fine. I'll report back on my experience.
