I would have refused delivery and told the dealer that I would refuse any future deliveries if they did not match the items I ordered using the online configurator. And, if I found out that the dealer knew about it but didn't tell me about it I would tell that dealer thanks but no thanks on doing business with them ever again.

All Mesh

So, let me stir up some more trouble. It's all mesh now. I have an 08/2020 build for MY21.

Makes me a little sad now that I know it used to be all Alcantara, or just Alcantara headliner with mesh sunroof, but it's almost as sad as knowing i didn't have the option for acoustic windows or heat/cooled cup holders for MY21. To me, all of this isn't a big deal, but posting cause it may make a difference for prospective buyers.

Don't worry! The dash and door panels still have leather on them. Haha!

It has always been all mesh. Alcantara is an option that for MY21 has evidently changed so mesh was on the sunroof panel.

Ahhh, sorry. You're right. Just like the other options I mentioned above, I never had the 776 Anthracite Alcantara Headliner option. M50is still do, but as you guys saw throughout this thread, the sunroof will probably stay mesh.

Thanks for keeping me in check!

I can’t say that I mind the mesh cover at all. As previously mentioned, it will almost always be open and when closed I feel the alcantara may give the inside too much of a dark/cavern like feel. The mesh lets a bit of daylight through and doesn’t feel as heavy. The colour is very similar (anthracite). Not a bother at all for me. Here’s a few pictures I took today, in case anyone wants another look.

thanks for posting these pictures. I think it is acceptable but again it is more about the false advertising thing...

If anybody has good pictures of the full alcanthara headliner that would help future buyer who want to call BMW for a refund on this option... I surely will.

My car is currently in the building process so it's too late to change anything unfortunately.

I have to check it out tonight. Although I have my M50i I am still thinking if I really need a sun roof. I never missed it. most of the time it's closed......I will see in the summer.

I have opened mine only a handful of times in almost two years. I like having one, just not sure why. LOL

that was my main attraction to the alcanthara headliner, I also never open my sunroof, so having something that really block the sun as much as possible was a great uptick. I wish the car could be optioned without the sunroof, even better just a small sunroof made of metal, not glass. these giant moonroof made of glass weight a ton and they really don't bring much value. It was a really cool trick 10 years ago but I wish we could decide if we want them or not.

I understand some of the concern but truthfully, I'm quite OCD and I never noticed (which tells you it blends well) and for the $650 investment, it would not have deterred me from purchasing it knowing the sunroof wasn't Alcantara. The option is quite underpriced if you compare to other brands. Porsche would have charged $3-5k for it.

In the configurator, when selecting the alcantara headliner, the sunroof shade does not look alcantara, though BMW did a great job of making it look unclear. This “issue” seems similar to the ivory white/night blue interior suddenly gaining a black dash for MY21. A sit down with a BMWUSA rep would be very interesting right now.

I have the Alcantara option with the mesh sunroof cover. I’m pretty focused on details (OK my wife says I’m anal) and it really doesn’t bother me at all.

You really have to touch the mesh to see that it’s not Alcantara

Hey there, I have alcantara and the sunshade is mesh. It IS supposed to be alcantara as well but again, impacted by COVID supply issues.

That COVID excuse is just that, a bs excuse for BMW to save money. Plain and simple. Just like they removed the media storage that the earlier year vehicles had standard. Memory is dirt cheap.
But again, bean counters with their greasy mitts at work. I guess they have to justify their lucrative salaries.

Here are the first two pages of 2021 X5/6 product planning bulletin from BMW Canada (don't have the 3rd page). On these first two pages I don't see any reference on Alacantra change. It must be a recent decision. Credit to mmzz for sharing these on his thread.

such a shame the carbon fiber option trim was not available in the USA

so many cool options available for these cars and we are stuck with some random limitation made by the marketing...

“Small” changes like this aren’t explicitly communicated, just like the crafted clarity pack where the volume button is no longer the crystal version in MY2021 cars.

Hard to imagine any man whining about self latching doors, headliner material, heated/cooled cup holders, things that one would expect to hear from women. C'mon guys how cushy soft does your world need to be, time to man up a bit.

I am not sure who told you that 'men' cannot appreciate craftsmanship and quality products.... Or are you member of a lumberjack association from the 70's

seriously that comment is just batsh** crazy, I had to write something to reply.

Would you please stop trying to hijack this thread??

You seem to not understand that these are features that are offered in other SUVs from Mercedes, Range Rover, etc and if BMW is to remain on top in this segment they need to offer them too or else their competitors may catch up. Hell, you can get a 575-hp RR Sport SVR with a refrigerator! A Dodge RAM TRX with heated and cooled front AND rear seats!

I have my M3 when I want to drive fast. My X5 is my cruiser. It's as simple as that.

No need to make excuses, the things that seem to be of such importance to you would usually be more of a concern for women not men. My X5 does 0-60 in under 4 seconds and is a beast of an SUV. Cushy soft options are not a make or break matter at that juncture. Sorry that the point I am making causes you such obvious distress and is far from what you characterize as a "hijack" simply because you don't agree.

Are you frigging joking?? What does “man up” have to do with wanting a fully optioned luxury vehicle?? It’s more like “pony up the coin and go big or go home”.
Many including myself want it all including performance. The nice thing is luxury and performance don’t have to be sacrificed at this level nor should you. Just check “yes” to everything when the options list comes up. No one regrets getting a fully loaded luxury vehicle providing they can afford to. The only regrets we see on this forum is options they didn’t get and these threads come up more often these days.
