Let me know the result that charge the vehicle via bonnet connections by closing the hood.
You have to leave the engine hood open when charging the battery, its in the manual. I just did it, worked fine. I have the CTEK charger, not the one with the BMW logo on it but the normal one from CTEK and it took the battery all the way to float and then maintain, which I think is #7, then I disconnected it. No funky idiot lights and the car works fine.

Ditto here. Works fine on the CTEK type charger with hood propped. Been spending hours over several evenings learning and enjoying the electronics and audio, plus deciding on what to program the shortcuts. The charger is definitely a battery saver for that!

Note about closing the hood: page 395 of the MY22 manual specifically states to “energetically” drop the hood from about 20”. They are not kidding. I was doing gentle push closes after first resting it on its latches, like on some Porsche, and had one side of the hood looking like it had a factory misalignment defect. That went away after implementing the Bavarian oomphpapa method LoL

Does not work on 2021 340I MHT.
We tried mine and other four new vehicles from the dealer lot. Same behaviour on all three different chargers: Ctek, Noco 5 and Noco 10.

I also have a 2021 X4 MHT and works no problem with all chargers.

Right you are, this is the first BMW I have owned where you actually had to slam the hood. Whatsupwidat? Goes against my grain

I followed a wire that goes from inside the car to the left hook that close the hood so the Idrive knows when the hood is open for sure.

I charge my 440I MHS 2021 with the hood open.

If you look at the app status page, it will show when the hood is open, similar to any of the doors or windows, and it will alert you to that fact if you were to try to start the vehicle, so it for sure knows unless the sensor switch is broken.

I got a 2023 X5 40i last week and met the same issue using ctek 5.0 since it's with MHT system. I kept the hood open/ unlatched and it got stuck at stage 3 too. I wonder if anyone has figured out the solution?

Discussion in other forum like g20 forum mentioned to leave hood open and use more powerful charger like Noco genius 10. Can it also work for X5?

This was posted in a different thread, and may help to explain what's the issue about keeping the hood open to charge the 40i.

Basically, while a trickle charger may maintain the 12vdc battery, the logic doesn't recharge the 48vdc battery until the charge rate exceeds 20A. So, depending on use conditions, that battery can fail. Driving far enough which triggers the alternator to charge things, if the trip is long enough, should keep everything happy, but lots of short trips or long periods of disuse probably won't.

I wanted to resurrect this old thread because, like many others, I was beyond frustrated trying to charge my 2022 X5 40i with the CTEK MXS 5.0 charger. It would get stuck at stage 3 and after 12 - 14 hours the charger would get extremely hot, and there were all sorts of clicking and whirring noises in the engine bay, so I would get nervous and unplug it. Apparently stage 3 can last up to 20 hours depending on the condition of the battery, but I wasn't willing to test that.

Interestingly this same charger has worked fine on my 2018 M240i.

So after finding and wading through this old thread I decided to try another route and bought a NOCO Genius 10 charger, which charges at 10 amps vs. 4.5 for the CTEK. Not that it necessarily means anything, the NOCO is also much more rugged feeling and much heavier with larger cables than the CTEK. After plugging it in (with the hood open) I went out to check on things after a few hours and was shocked to see the battery fully charged and in maintenance mode! And all the clicking and whirring noises had stopped. And yes, the car started and everything is working normally.

Anybody having issues with the BMW Wall Box L2 Charger? I plug ours in and the light stays white then goes out. The Wall Box has a blue line stating it's ready for charging.

unfortunately, that device isn’t one that folks recommend. it just looks pretty with its matching BMW “i” motif

have you tried the included flexible fast charging cable? since you have the Wallbox, i assume you didn’t buy the level 2 adapter for the FFC, but still plug it in to a 120v household outlet to test the charging connection. if it charges, then something might be wrong with your Wallbox (setup, programming, etc) or even user error. if it also doesn’t charge, then there’s likely something wrong with the vehicle charging components

The charger that came with the X5 works from the wall outlet. I finally turned off the breaker and moved the first dip switch for the WallBox App to off. Once that was done and turned the breaker on the BMW WallBox worked flawlessly and charged the X5 from 0 - 80% in roughly 3- 4 hours. We have the X5 time to charge set at midnight - 8 a.m. and ready for 9 a.m.. When I woke up at 4:45 this morning the X5 was already done charging. Love the setup works like a champ and nice to have a L2 charger in our garage.

BTW found out the BMW charger WIFI does not work in the U.S. only in China per others on different forms since December 2022.

The cost of the BMW L2 charger 600 and installation by a licensed contractor 1,300, which included 50A breaker with lockbar, power run, installation of the L2 charger, and inspection. BMW concierge wanted 2000. Pays to use local licensed electrical contractor that installs EV chargers.

This is a X5 M50i
Battery charge level was 45% after coding.
Before connecting the CTEK charger:
Opened the hood.
X5 was not locked, parking brake on and in sleep mode.
There were no lights on the dash or the idrive screen.

Connected a CTEK 7002 charger to see if it the battery would charge.
Within four hours it was in float maintenance mode.
Left the CTEK charger connected over night.
Next morning with the CTEK charger disconnected I checked the battery charge level using BimmerLink.
Battery charge level was @90%

I am getting the same Battery Management error message. I just took my vehicle in for service, and it charged fine at the dealer, and they could not find any errors. Additionally, they gave me an all electric loaner and it charged fine on my Type II charger. However... when i plug my car back in, it does not want to charge??? Anyone having similar issues?

Try a spritz of WD40 on the socket. Won't hurt, might help. Make sure the plug goes all the way in and the release latch comes fully back out which is needed to complete the interlock.
