The X5 M is also "engineered by M" so I don't know what the point of that is. You made the argument that it's not an M because is was not "listed" on a specific website and I showed that on the configurator, the opposite is true where it IS listed as such. Engineered by whom is - to that point - completely irrelevant.

I don't own the M50i anymore and the previous BMW I owned was an E60 M5 So I see both sides to it.

This is a “Drop the mic” on the topic if BMW places the M50i is a “M” or not. “Enhanced performance and design, engineered by BMW M.” Notice you won’t find a 40i regardless of “trim” in the “Black M section”. Agree with this marketing move or not, it is what it is. Take it up with BMW about what BMW considers their “M cars”. Last edited by MystroX5; 01-25-2022 at 03:02 PM.. |

You forgot the first part of the description by BMW….”Enhanced performance and design, engineered by BMW M.” This ship has sailed on this. This isn’t ambiguous or needs any interpretation. BMW spelled it out where they classify these vehicles by text and classification under the banner “M”. You don’t have to agree with BMW but it is what it is. What used to be a grey issue three years ago is now pretty Black and White by BMW’s own strait forward classification. In a way BMW has finally removed any confusion they use to dance around for years with the “M-Sport” but made a bold move with how they classify the new “M50i”. BMW did keep the “M-Sport” styling trim for the vehicles that don’t fall under their “M” badges. It’s also why M-Sport trim vehicles don’t get the large rear “M” badge. Nobody questions the merits if a X5M is a M car (well...ok...maybe some purists scoff at the idea of a SAV M...but still) |

It is not about the wording on the configurator, it is about the SECTION it is listed under and that is the same as the X5 M. That's just a fact. Quote:
I'm just saying that you can't use one official BMW-source to make your point while disputing the other. It's not as easy as that.

I think maybe you guys are talking past each other about two different things and possible agreeing without knowing it.
There is no doubt that the M50i is not an M model so no need to discuss that. M Models are a specific set of vehicles that BMW M sells (as listed in a previous post). The M50i, and other M Performance vehicles, do fall under the BMW M division, at least marketing wise, so in that sense they are BMW M vehicles but not M models. I think this thread has run its course and there really can be nothing but aggravation on all sides going forward. Why don't we switch to an easier subject - purchasing or leasing, which is better?

I feel like this topic gets raised every year and every year it's the same back and forth. BMW ///Marketing at its finest.
My stake in all this is a G20 "m340i". I don't consider it an M car for the following reasons: 1) Dynamically it's nearly identical to a 330i with m-sport suspension. The largest difference is the b58 motor. The M3 on the other hand is a totally different beast with a different motor, different suspension setup, track oriented performance parts, etc. 2) It very obviously replaces the f30 340i. Aside from generational improvements and power increases, the g20 330i replaces the f30 330i, the g20 m340i replaces the f30 340i, and the g80 M3 replaces the f80 M3. It's not like BMW offered an entirely new class of car in the m340i. If you can't see that adding the "m" in front of 340i is nothing more than a marketing tactic, then you're in denial.

in the end what is the argument about? whose x5 gets their family to school, grocery store or mall in a more noble fashion? the truth is regardless of which badge it wears nearly all of the X5 sold are used the same way.

SAV makes sense versus SUV, unless of course you 'utilize' it as such
