Inside of Exhaust Tips Peeling Off
I did a quick search and couldn't find anyone else having this issue, however, it appears to be an issue with other BMW models. The inside chrome coating of the exhaust tips has begun to peel off and looks terrible.
I first noticed it with less than 5K miles on the vehicle so I took in to my local dealership and they have agreed to replace them under warranty. I enquired as to whether I could have the chrome ones swapped out for the shadowline ones and they were unwilling to do so, however, they did state that if I ordered the shadowline ones, they would install for free and I could keep the new chrome ones that were being replaced under warranty. After enquiring about ordering the shadowline ones, I am told that they are on backorder and not currently available, so I was able to get some from IND for $530USD all in including shipping to Canada. I struggle with how a 3rd party distributor can have them in stock, but I can't order them directly from BMW. I was planning on swapping the chrome ones out at some point anyways, so at least I save on the labour.

This happened on my 2019 M40i. I ended up using BBQ flat black paint to touch up. Took only a few minutes per side. Looked fine. That said I've since traded in that vehicle. In any event, looks like they never solved the flaking issue.

I saw another member with a similar issue on his X5. Dealer wouldn't replace but seems like warranty item to me.
Good luck on getting it fixed. |

I have exactly the same issue and it seems to be only the LHS too (guessing that's the exhaust that's always open). No service due yet, but when it is, I'll be asking the dealer to replace.

Same issue for me around 16K miles
I had to take my X5 in for oil filter replacement - they told me the filter seperated and they have to order a new housing in - also they are looking at the exhaust peeling issue.
Originally i was going to paint myself but thought - wait - this is a BMW - paint shouldn't just come off. |

Happened to my 2019 X5 40i as well, left side started to peel off (97xx miles). I just use black marker to cover it up since is still minimal. Is less notice that way but if it get worst to a point like yours then I'll take it in. Even if is on back order, I'll have them order it and write it down on paper just in case. When the product arrived and the warranty expired, at least they can still honor it.
I did the same thing with my steeling column and is on back order. My warranty expired next year and god know how long this back order takes. :

Hey everyone — just a quick shout out to this thread and this forum. I leveraged the intelligence here, and, while taking my ‘21 45e in for regularly scheduled maintenance (engine oil, microfilter), I mentioned the flaking paint on the “Exhaust Pipe Embellisher” (actual part name). The service advisor noted they could paint or replace, and I urged replacement — all done under warranty with no charge. Thank you!

I had the same issue on my end too with my 2019 X5 with 18k miles. Since I'm still covered under warranty, local BMW dealer took care of it. Good luck!!

Reviving this thread --
Just brought my car to the dealer, replacement is covered by warranty, but just curious what others have experienced in terms of the replacement part. I have attached the replacement offered- shadow line trimmed on the outside and regular chrome on the inside. Compared to the old defective part -- the inside is painted dark gray. Just curious what replacement you guys were offered? My concern with the replacement is that the inside will not age well. |

My replacement part was identical to OEM-gray on the inside. I assume BMW may be using these chrome pieces as it may hold up better. Personally I like the gray pieces. Anyway-just frustrating….

I don’t understand why this is such a struggle for them. As I posted in another thread, I fixed our ‘19 by knocking off the loose paint with sandpaper and then hitting it with matte high temp paint and never had the issue come back. If a random guy with a spray can, masking paper and tape can figure it out, you’d assume they could identify a fix in manufacturing vs giving up and going with silver.

This is quick DIY fix with high temp spray paint and carefully tape-masking off paint/area to not overspray. I didn't bother to remove anything. Probably starts on the left side as you have more exhaust coming thru that side. Go slow, do a few layers, be patient. Spray the new gray/unpainted ones black, they'll look like crud soon.
I always paint all my vehicles' tail pipes black if they aren't already. Saves some elbow grease in the wash bay, and you don't see the sooty tips between washes. |

My 2020 X5 has the same issue. It's terrible on the drivers side and starting on the passenger side. After a long trip and washing the car, my hose started spraying off more chunks on the drivers side. Will have to take it to the Stealership to get it done under warranty. |
