G05 Adaptive LED Headlight (Do both the lights turn on)

Question on LED Headlights...

In my X5, I noted that only one (outside one) of the headlamps turn on each side (Left & Right). When i asked the dealer he said the inside LED headlights (i.e the ones next to the kidney grills) are dummy and there is no bulb in there.

Having 2 headlights with corona rings around them is the BMW design. Am already not liking the fact that the non laser versions have only the lower half of the corona rings, and now they are saying one of the headlamps is a dummy one.

Can some one please confirm this, would appreciate if someone can take a pic and post on the thread.

I'm pretty sure that it was mentioned in the thread regarding the IIHS rating that there was only one on the non-laser fixture.

I haven't received delivery yet but I would be mad as well - looking at this video it seems they both switch on?

It seems the laser module is housed there and you won't see it unless it's activated

Yep on standard adaptive LEDs, the inner housing is a dummy and only the "U" DRL lights up. The outer unit is low and high beams. Only the optional lasers have inner and outer units with low/high beams.

I learnt my lesson the hard way: never order base lights on a BMW. Its a shame to call base headlights adaptive full LED lights. The words fool you to think you have proper LED lights and the only difference vs laser is the distance they can illuminate but it turns out base headlights are the half baked corners cut option for headlight. They must really note these details in package descriptions

Thanks folks for the details, i guess we have to live with these half baked lights... i am so disappointed that I did not order Laser headlights, I would have ordered executive package itself...

So in the G05 specs noted above for the LED version I see the diagram shows cornering lights, Does these cornering lights work for anyone? i don't see these lights coming on my X5...

There was a recent update to enable cornering lights on Lasers.

See - My cornering lights now work . . . https://g05.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh....php?t=1594891

Tech docs are not US specific and the majority of X5s I've seen in the US with standard adaptive LED headlights do not include cornering lights.

This issue has come up many times previously. You MUST order either the Exec Pkg or spend the grand for the laser option or you will be stuck forever with dime store DRL's & dummy bulbs. As mentioned you also will have poor performing headlights per the IIHS. That BMW is sticking subpar headlights on a $62,000 + premium luxury SUV is outrageous.
I guess they also don't care that the X5 does not look like a BMW coming at you with these cheap lights. Forget tradition bring on the profits!

website on russian only, but you can see what they doing and offering. there many pics and videos.
main concerns for me are warranty issues and how it will work with adaptive lights.

Odd that the adaptive LEDs on the G01 light both lights up (there is no dummy light). I would assume if they work on one G series model, they should be able to get them to work on all of them.

From your photos, the G01 has the upgraded 552 Adaptive full LED headlamps with Iconic DRLs.

The standard 5A4 LED headlights with cornering and round DRLs on the G01/2 xDrive30i are "packaged" similarly to the standard 552 Adaptive full LED headlamps with half DRLs on G05s, where both have dummy interior projector units, outer units are both LED low/high beams, non-Iconic DRLs, and bulb/LED bulb turn signals.

X3/4 xDrive30i optioned with Executive Package gets upgraded to the 552 Adaptive full LED headlamps with Iconic DRLs and LED eyebrow turn signals (standard on X3/4 M40i) - NOT to be confused with the standard 552 units on the G05!

The G01/G02 552 units are similar in design with the G05/6 5AZ Icon Adaptive LED headlights with Laserlight - minus the laserlights.

With the X3/4 and X5/6, BMW's packaging scheme is that if you want full featured headlamps - where both inner and out LED units are functional, eyebrow LED turn signals and Iconic DRLs - you gotta pony up.

You can also see the same packaging approach on new G20 3 Series, there are 3 headlight designs for the 330i/x:

1. Standard LED
2. With Convenience Package $$ - 5A4 LED with cornering
3. With Executive Package $$$ - 5AZ Icon Adaptive LED Headlights with Laserlight

So strange they wouldn't use the same 552 lights on the G05 that they do on the G01. I'm not in marketing so I suppose charging more money for the upgraded light with full functionality makes sense from a business stand point. The upgrade from G01 to G05 should just include the better headlights in my opinion.

But you're comparing a fully optioned out g01 to a base g05 head lights.

I'm glad this post came up. I've been very disappointed with my headlight performance - 4 weeks into ownership of an M50D - It has the adaptive LED lights and they aren't a patch on the lights I had in my Volvo XC90
