Another BS Apple feature to sell new models of Iphone...an old Iphone with NFC feature should be able to unlock a car as we already use it to pay with it!

Isn't it a BMW issue? You could have the newest iPhone and it still wouldn't work.

Could be worse, the X3/X4/X3M/X4M models are not supported even after 7/1/20 SOP.

Edit: The 7 series is also omitted as supported models.

The opening process is less convenient but the idea is that you don't have to carry key fob. That's convenient.

Better hope the valet has a compatible iPhone as you could iMessage the digital key and then revoke access after you leave. Being a M owner, I would love this as there is a restricted key option, would be great to limit speed to 5mph— no more joy rides

I can unlock my car with the BMW Connected Drive App on a 2017 Iphone SE...why do I need a need a new phone or new app...anyway why bothering with that when you have comfort access...there's no need to take you phone to unlock the car...just use the handle and in 1/10 s it's open with confort access!

Yeah this feature won’t even be remotely useful until next year with the next release that uses the U1 chip to act like the fob. Meaning you can keep the fob in your pocket just like the fob. But I bet that will require MY2022 cars lol

That doesn’t address security issues like being in your house with your phone 10 feet from the car and that allowing a comfort access unlock I imagine.

I'll bet this has to wait for G01/G02 to get "real" iDrive 7.

7 Series G11 was launched in late 2015. It had all the hardware required (iDrive 5, wireless charging, WiFi, etc) for Wireless CarPlay.... but BMW set the ARBITRARY date of AFTER JULY 2016.... for CarPlay compatibility.

So the 7 Series from launch date on 2015 to June-2016... aren’t officially compatible with CarPlay and CarPlay can’t be added from the ConnectedDrive Store even though the car is compatible and has the SAME hardware than the one a July 2016 7 Series had. CarPlay can be enabled via coding (like the ID6 Ui can also be enabled via coding) and works flawlessly.

So it seems BMW is doing this again.... No matter wether they launched with ID7 a feature called ‘Remote Software Updates’ .... that seem to mean nothing for them. They still don’t update anything on older cars. They set arbitrary dates for software-only features ignoring wether past cars have all the compatible hardware.

iPhone 11's all have the U1 chip. The Apple Car Play uses NFC, as the phone has to be very close. 10 ft away will not work.

As it was announced during the WWDC keynote today, keeping your phone in your pocket will work. Won't have to wait for MY2022, or maybe that will be the G80/G82 to embrace the large grill

And BMW wonders why MB S class pounces on the 7 series sales wise, always one step behind.

While this is totally wishful, I think they just mean July 2020 build will work from the factory and that the rest of us will just have to wait for a remote software upgrade which will be available sometime after that.

According to the BMW website, you only need Comfort Access (SA 322) and Connected Drive Services (SA 6AE).

BUT the list of compatible iPhones and Watch are all ones that have the U1 chip in it (not sure if the iPhone XS has it). This could mean there's additional hardware in the car to support it that we currently do not have, even with the current digital key. Having said that, you use the Car Key feature just like the way android works so I don't get how you need the U1.

It's all very annoying not getting a clear answer. And BMW are pretty rich to not consider rolling this out somehow to existing cars with NFC. At least charge us or something!

The subscription fee is for the digital key on supported Samsung phones, not for the key cards. The cards don't have any subscription fees.

Not in the segment that Apple showed. They demoed the version shipping today and they also showed at the end what they plan to start shipping next year. This aligns with everything that has already been shared regarding the standard v2 and v3.

V2 uses NFC and needs the phone next to the car door.

V3 uses NFC and WiFi (or BT) to add proximity to allow you to keep the phone in your pocket.

https://www.macrumors.com/2020/05/04...tion-released/

V3 coming next year (and who knows when to BMW) will be able to fully replace the fob and be more like Tesla.

The key is stored in the Secure Enclave like the credit cards. I'm thinking it will function similar to the credit cards in that the code used will change each time it's used.

If someone, does "steal" the key you can log into iCloud and disable it. So they won't get too far for too long.
