Existing miles on a "new" X5
First time buyer of a new car (California). I assume there will always be some miles on new cars. At what number one should start questioning for the cars on the lot? And for the cars custom ordered?

I had 7 miles on my custom ordered X6. Mine was trucked down to the dealer, so there was driving from the factory floor to the truck, and then once at the dealer, a drive to fill up the fuel tank, since my dealer didn’t have their own gas pump. I expect the mileage to be a little more if it travels by train due to adding in getting on/off the train car.

Some cars from the factory are randomly selected for further quality testing and may have extra miles (teens) from that. If its a custom order, there should be minimal mileage on it unless it was one of those. Any car not ordered or sold on a dealer lot is fair game for a test drive. But really its a moot point if you want to know what qualifies as "new", any car that has not been titled before qualifies as new. So the manager's demo car, the test drive car, or any car in the loaner fleet can be sold as a "new" car. In some cases the factory warranty may have already started. Despite the mileage or warranty status on those cars the advantages is that they qualify for new car incentives and discounts, but unfortunately it doesn't mean you are going to get a significantly better price because of the mileage on them; especially now with low inventory, supply chain constraints and semiconductor shortage.
