G05 X5 Steering System

Does anyone have a clear diagram and/or a clear detailed description of the G05 X5 baseline front wheel steering system, from steering wheel to front wheels?

I think the topic deserves its own discussion and I've had trouble finding clear and comprehensive non-marketing data on it. My SA had told me it was steer-by-wire, but I no longer think that's accurate after posting wrong info about it and trying to confirm to myself. It does appear to be electric boost rather than hydraulic, but I'd like to clearly understand the complete electromechanical signal/linkage flow.

Hopefully this helps. The steering column connects to the EPS at the points I highlighted in red.

From the technical guide:
The systems already familiar from other vehicle models will not subsequently be examined in depth in this document. If required, the detailed system descriptions can be found in the product information listed below:

Steering, see G12 Chassis and Suspension

I've enclosed the G12 Chassis and Suspension guide.

Here's a diagram of the G12 EPS which gives you a more clearer view.

That is very helpful! So, not steer-by-wire, but rather conventional rack-and-pinion with electrical (rather than hydraulic) boost. No need to top up electrical "power steering fluid" :-). Interesting to see the difference in the rack for IAS as well. Nice, thank you, finally!

Ja, even in with vehicles with steer-by-wire, like Nissans, systems there's a fail-safe clutch in its column. In *normal driving situations, this clutch is disengaged, but if one of the three control modules detects a fault, the clutch snaps shut and the steering acts as a conventional, electrically assisted rack-and-pinion system. The clutch also engages when the engine shuts off, so if a SBW-equipped car fails to start, the driver can still steer the car while pushing it.

I also posted the G12 Chassis and Suspension PDF. Not much more info but a good reference since it details other systems that shared with G05 and G07.

I'm surprised the SA would use that as a selling point considering how much negative publicity steer-by-wire received on the Q50. But I suppose I'm also not too surprised considering SA's are so hit or miss.

Nissan tends to invest a lot of money into technologies that sound great on paper, but in practical use are completely useless and in some cases worse than the traditional method. Steer by wire, variable compression motor, and of course everyone's favorite - CVT.

In theory, steer-by-wire should allow for greater comfort, and better self-driving integration. In reality, it feels wonky in spirited driving, robs the driver of any joy (a common theme of 2010 and newer Nissan/Infiniti cars despite their best efforts), and the integration with self driving has not been executed well at all.

The variable compression motor was supposed to be revolutionary, allowing it to adjust the engine's compression ratio in real time based on what's being asked of it. This was supposed to provide power when needed, and save fuel when not needed. In reality? Completely average fuel consumption and has provided no benefit whatsoever.

Last but not least, CVT's in nearly their entire lineup (I believe it's even starting to infiltrate the Infiniti lineup). And incredibly bad CVT at that - remember the class action lawsuit due to the CVT's going to shit in the Altima?

So why'd I even bother with the Q50? Well.... back in 2016... you inject any car with 400 hp and it instantly becomes more interesting. I'm happy to say I've moved on to greener pastures however.

Very interested in this as well... we literally driving these cars via a keyboard and mouse.

For my 135i, i absolutely love how i could feel the tires and the road in my hands. I could drive that thing all day 24/7 but my one complaint is the steering is heavy. Yes the x5 doesnt have that connection to the road but its easy and relaxing to drive. It doesn't take much focus at all as oppose to the 135i. It's superb at what it is supposed to be. My family is safe and comfortable in the x5. My 75 lb pit loves it too. Yes i have scratchers all over the door sills on my 2000 dollar paint

Some SAs are really something else.

For my x5 I actually went to a different dealer than when I got my m2. Because the first dealer, a veteran sales guy who gave me the speech about how long he has been with BMW and racing and a bunch of other blah blah blah. Told me I'm not able to order the x5 sdrive 40i with 3rows + m sport. Thanks to this forum I went back with the BMW NA ordering guide but I was again adamantly told by the veteran SA that it could not be done.

I went to a different dealer and placed the order the same day.
I still go to the first dealer for service tho. They have superb customer service. Maybe I'll meet that veteran racer SA someday and I can kindly point to him my 7 seater m sport.

Not to hijack this thread, but I remember when I was first looking to place the order for the 2020 model way back before it hit showrooms, and one dealer was adamant that I couldn't place the order because the online car configurator was for the 2019 model, despite me handing them the option codes off the 2020 ordering guide. You really are correct in how valuable forums like these are, especially when we can't rely on dealers giving accurate information.
