Compact Spare Tire Kit for X5 M50i

I made the mistake of not checking the box for the $150 compact spare tire kit for my new X5 M50i. A recommendation as to where I can purchase one online that is certain to fit would appreciated.

Thanks. Expensive mistake on my part. By not ordering the compact spare, I actually thought I was receiving a full size spare and opting out of the compact spare, LOL.

A full size spare will not fit under the cargo floor, the compact barely does.

I haven’t tried this kit but did see it. If you have the M Sport brakes I wouldn’t get it though. The wheel is 18”, which won’t fit around the brakes. The solution they sell is a massive spacer that pushes the spare wheel far enough out that it won’t touch the brakes. This will require really long bolts, and will mean that the contact patch of the wheel is really far away from the wheel hub. As a casual student of physics this worries me, because it increases the chances of failure - and I fear that it could allow the joint where the hub connects to the drive axel to bend beyond spec. I may be paranoid, but I don’t get a good feeling from it.

If you do get this kit for a car with the m sport brakes, I would recommend using it only as last resort, and only at very low speed to get you directly to the nearest garage or tire shop.

Just my 2 cents.

That standard compact spare fits over the MSport brakes with no problem. The spare mentioned in the "kit" appears to be the same so there would be no problem with MSport brakes.

Edit: For clarity, I'm referring to the spare in the kit that matthewk put together not the third party one mentioned.

Edit 2: The wheel in his package is not correct, it should be 36-11-6-880-744

For the BMW spare tire option, does it raise the cargo floor like it does in the X3?

No, the spare fits into the area under the cargo floor.

The OEM spare is 19" and clears the M Sport brakes.

The spare which is stored under the cargo area under the cargo floor panel and doesn't impact G05 rear cargo space.

Did you have a flat or were you just practicing? Or I guess they could be pictures of someone else's vehicle.

I got a flat on the Express Lanes back on March 27. Was cruising at 75-80MPH, ran over bolt or something, then rapid air loss in a couple of secs, air suspension adjusted to RR wheel but felt really sluggish with steering and didn't want to chance shredding the tire and wheel despite having RF. Pulled over, call Express Lane courtesy roadside assistance and swapped the tire with spare.

Pirelli covered the replacement tire under warranty since it was 10K miles.

Thanks. Looks like I will go with the multi part OEM purchase mentioned above. Ugh....I wish my SA would have suggested I get the OEM compact spare for $150 but in the end, it's my fault, I should have asked more questions and done more research.

You didn't say why you were asking this question but if you are comparing the height of the cargo floor to the underside of the cargo cover when pulled closed (covering the cargo area), then you will find that the height of the X3 with the spare option is about the same as the X5 with or without the spare option. The spare tire option on an X3 raises the cargo floor by 3".

Here are the various heights from the cargo floor to the underside of the cargo cover when closed.. ..

X3 without spare option: 18.5"
X3 with spare option:15.5"
X5 with or without spare option:15.25"

Where you gain space in the X5 is its width and length.

Interesting. Thanks for information. Actually more interested in cargo floor to ceiling since need to fit a dog crate.

FYI - I ordered the above online yesterday. The company contacted me and said the compact spare would not fit over my M sport brakes so I cancelled the order.

Try this wheel: https://www.getbmwparts.com/oem-part...-2-36116880744
You’ll need the 19” diameter.

Any BMW salespersons our there who want to order a bunch of stock vehicles with the spare wheel option and then sell them at a dealership profit?

I wish I had known this when ordering the car. My dumb sales person told me with a really sad and disappointed face that "yeah if you order that spare kit then it will cause a bump in your trunk" and I took him for his word and didn't order it and regret it ever since!

Yes, it could be an expensive mistake to trust a salesman and not verify the information.

So after reading through this thread, can I safely assume that the OEM $150 "space-saver spare" option when ordering WILL fit over the M sport brakes, and will not cause any issues with the cargo space?
