Brake squeal

Okay...asking again. Now that you have had a few months with your cars. I'm turning in my 2018 x6m in two weeks and will be picking up my new 2021 x6m (donington grey / orange interior). My 2018 brakes squealed like a pig. Should I expect the same from my new one or what???!!!

My F85 squealed badly. The F95 isn't even close being as bad but it does squeal when they are really dirty. Once i power wash them they go back to being silent.

I had the same issue before, I complained to the workshop and I show them how badly was the squeezing. Then, BMW workshop changes the front drums and discs

Any new BMW with M-Sport brakes (Blue Calipers) are prone to squeaks due to the contact surface of the pads and constantly changing environmental laws that force manufactures to use different compounds that are environmentally friendly.......

Frequent washing helps, also drying off with some hard braking after washing will reduce noise. They hate city driving and light application.

Drive it like you stole it and the squeal will go away.

There is no way, do you have hearing issues?

These brakes 100% squeal unless you wash your car every 3 days.

I’ve cringed for years over the brake squeal. My two F86s were embarrassing. They sounded like 50 year old school buses. Pedestrians would hear it and look over at me shaking their heads. My previous generations also squealed but not as bad. My new one hasn’t made a peep. I feel like I’m living in an alternate universe. With each passing day, I scratch my head waiting for it to happen. The sound of silence is amazing. And I drive it. Hard.

Mine is usually squeal free for 3 days following a good detailer hand wash where they spend 30 mins on the wheels alone.

But once that dust cakes on the rotor and pads enough, the squeal returns.

The only way you dont get squeal is if youre country driving and brake as much as I brake in 1 day in 1 month. NYC driving sucks.

The sad part is, NYC is blatantly trying to get people off the road. Traffic is only getting worse as they are constantly messing with stop light timing, adding speed cameras that tag you for going 7MPH (Just recently got a ticket for going 32 in a 25 in the mail) over and red light cameras every 100 feet, changing 2 way streets to one way, and constantly doing road work. Roads that were just paved 2 years ago get repaved so its a constant cycle of lane closures. They want you ticketed and frustrated to the point where you stop driving here.

Oh also, they can and will ticket you for staying in a parking spot too long, even if you pay. They come and mark your tires, if youve been in that spot for more than 1 hour, they will ticket you for exceeding the time limit allowed.

Its not enough this piece of shit city has a state income tax, city income tax, state sales tax, city sales tax and high property taxes...they have to fuck you with traffic and tickets as every possible opportunity.

The speed cameras are out of control but it's supposed to be once you hit 10 over. You should fight that. I'm on Staten Island. They just reduced the speed on Hylan Blvd down to 30 mph for the entire length, and of course at the same time added a shitload of new cameras. This is nonsense. I'm glad I don't travel that road too often during the week. At least the weekend is still camera free.

I can feel your frustration, the state/city has ways to generate revenue via taxes and tickets

Class Action

WOODCLIFF LAKE, N.J. – A class-action lawsuit has recently been filed against BMW of North America alleging defective “M Compound” brakes cause excessive brake squeal and are also dangerous.

The lawsuit includes former and current owners and lessees of BMW vehicles fitted with the M Compound brakes.

The plaintiff claims he brought his 2020 M8 Convertible to the dealership 10 times due to the loud brakes and was told each time the noise was normal with “high-performance brakes.”

He was also informed about BMW service information bulletin 34 10 19:

“Inform the customer during a consultation that the M Compound (standard equipment) and M Carbon Ceramic (optional) brakes are high-performance brake systems which are designed for sporty, dynamic driving styles. As a side effect of the highest possible brake performance, customers are likely to hear noises due to the extremely resilient materials. In the same conversation, inform the customer that his/her braking performance can help ensure that the noises do not occur or disappear quickly.”

BMW Squeaky Brakes Are Allegedly Dangerous

The lawsuit goes beyond noise complaints, alleging the noisy brakes expose the driver, occupants and others on the road to an “increased risk of accident, injury, or death.”

The reasoning from the action is the squealing brakes allegedly are the means BMW drivers use to determine if their brakes are in need of repair. And if the squeak is “common,” they will not know when to go in for service.

I understand that these are high performance brakes and are sport/track focused but BMW should also realize these vehicles aren't going to be tracked everyday.

This is a solvable problem.

Disappointing to hear that the squeal carried over from last generation. Have had an F85 for three years - been a great car but the squeal was ridiculous. Did eventually fix it with carbon ceramic pads & BG Stop Squeal though but thought BMW would have it under control with the oem setup this generation. Considering moving to an F95 - the squeal is not a deal killer as long as there is a fix like with the F85 but still shouldn’t have to be necessary.

There is a very simple solution that puts an end to the brake squeal. I did it myself on Sunday and have not had a squeal since. It is basically the same procedure for Bedding Brakes. The end result is an appropriate, even layer, of pad material deposited onto the rotors. This will eliminate the squeal.

As different pads require a slightly different processes, your results may vary.

I went to an open area without other traffic or pedestrians. I accelerated quickly to 75mph and then hit the brakes hard, slowing rapidly to approx. 5-10mph. I repeated this five times in rapid succession. This gets the brakes very hot, which is required to apply the layer of pad material onto the rotor. I then drove around on the interstate for about 10 minutes without applying the brakes at all. This allowed the brakes to cool down. If you don’t allow the brakes to cool before stopping, you run the risk of creating a high spots on the rotors while you sit with the pads squeezed against hot rotors. This will result in brake shudder, often mis-named “warped rotors.”

Enjoy!

Then you had to clean your wheels for all the brake dust.
Problem back again.

I had 0 squeal for the first ~5k miles. After that one day it started and hasn't stopped. It goes away temporarily after hard breaking, but the silence doesn't last long.

My 2016 and 2019 F86s squealed from almost day one. My previous years only squealed when the brakes were dirty. I know the silence won't last but I'll take it for as long as I can.
