Noise issue

I guess I wasn't crazy about this noise.

3 out of 4 local installation have the same noise.
It sounded like something is loose and only happen on the turn or weight shifting.
It is worst at low speed like turning left or right in the parking lot.

I've discussed this with MSS UK and spent days to figure it out.

So far I've fixed 2 and the other one will come back next week.

With that saying, I am still not 100% that this is the fix as MSS UK think that it was caused by different things that what I think it is.

I was holding back to share my finding since MSS UK still working on it.
But, since this issue start popping up, I decided to share my finding.
So, this is my fix that is not fully approved by MSS UK.

All the kits for F95/F96 X5M/X6M comes with the protective sleeve that originally designed to cover and protect the adjuster.
Instead of using it as what it is intended for, I use it to keep the main spring centered and seated tighter to the adjuster by sandwiched it in between the adjuster and the main spring. (as shown in the picture).
Bring it as high as possible where the main spring will not have direct contact to the adjuster.

Also, another thing that I found out.
On the rear, at full drop, the car is sitting on the bump stop.
You may not feel it, but I did.
So, after playing around with the setup. My setup on the adjuster is fully closed on the front and 10mm thread gap on the rear.
With this setup, you are still maintaining the stock rake, which is about 0.5" to 0.75" higher on the rear to the front.

I hope my information help and I will update once MSS UK have their solution.

So the assumption is the orange spring is slipping and knocking on the adjuster?

I don't think it is slipping, because there is no marking of it being slipping.

My guess is the rear suspension doesn't travel up and down in a straight line which causing the coil to tap the adjuster.
In this picture you can see where the rear wheel is closer to the front and full droop, but centered when on the ground.

Oh interesting, thank you for posting your findings. I'm positive MSS will work to provide a solution or correction.

EDIT: what I really wanted to say was you have the spring in upside down

Based on this I think I will wait until there is some thing that doesn't have these issues. I really want to lower this car, but not that badly that I have to deal with the sounds and the knocks.

Might have to wait until full coilovers.

Thanks for posting this!

I just ordered H&R sport spring.
If you are interested.

Most of my M customers doesn't like to go with full coilover because you will lose the EDC.

Thanks for figuring this out for everyone. I must say your idea is freaking genius lol

Glad i held off installing my MSS Kit. I would need MSS to address the issue first. What concerns me more is that the car at max drop in the rear isn't even all that low is sitting on the bump stops basically rendering your shock useless.

I looked at H&R product picture, and found out that they includes a new pair of bump stop.
My guessing it would be for the rear.

Does the stock bump stop look a lot larger than that?

How's the ride quality ? Better or worse than MSS? I am very happy with MSS ride quality at the moment.

I had H&R on F86 and it was bouncy at the lowest setting.

I'll switch if H&R's are at least same quality and less drama as I think I'll have to pay for labor to re-install the MSS for the fix anyway.

I haven't install H&R yet.
But based on the picture, it will have an H&R kind of ride quality.

That is exactly the noise I get as well but I get it turning right or less sharply. MSS said they would get back at me ASAP with a solution. I am glad I got to see this RG Sport’s response before I went like a moron to the dealership to shed money for no reason. I did notice that the bump stop is tight in the rear as well. I will wait for full resolution before I take it in for alignment. Hoping the resolution is not putting the sleeve in because that means doing the rears again.

How much are the H&R’s?

H&R is retail at $599.

How do you explain the same noise in cars that have not have MSS Springs installed.

Not saying this would be your issue.
But 3 out of 3 local installed, have same noise.
And I've fixed 2 of them.

I remember that when we pull the rear again, we had 2 potential reasons for the noise:

1) the black spring not always aligning well (they were in correctly)

2) play on the adjuster collar (stock has a plastic sleeve and then a rubber receiver that the spring sits on (MSS is spring on the adjusting collar and there is definitely play)

I am indeed hoping it can be fixed some other way because I don’t want to spend another 3 hours doing that. But that makes sense. I will keep H&R in mind. I would go coilovers right now if I could.

For my non-MSS car:

I have popping noises coming from the rear of my F96 and these sounds are not as loud or as frequent as the problem in the video.

that noise would comming from weight shift like RG sport mentioned.
you will need to check to tightend rear link bolt
even though you tightened, it will require more. i dont know torque spec for that.
because i had same issue when i did MSS on x3M. so i made sure when i did x5M

if you still hear noise, that is it from my previous experience.

IND sent me an update today. Your solution was shared by MSS today as the suggested way to get rid of the knocking noises in the rear.

Knowing that you have successfully done this with good results makes me hopeful. Just wanted to say thanks. IND has also gone above and beyond trying to find a resolution and I am thankful for their hep too.
