Black vs Skyscraper grey?
New to forum and impressed with the knowledge base here. Started with an Audi Q5, then Audi S7, then a Macan GTS, to a model 3, to current model Y. Recovering Tesla owner and can’t get rid of fast enough. Just put a deposit down on an x50e.
I initially put in for black sapphire but never owned a black car. I’m more of a monthly washer at best so having second thoughts on black. Should I go skyscraper grey instead? I plan to do a chrome delete with a shop that uses auto flex gloss peelable paint. Leaning toward keeping wheels as is. Calling all skyscraper grey fans to put up pics, particularly if you have chrome deletes! Last edited by schaNYC; 01-29-2024 at 02:08 PM.. |

Welcome!
Black looks great, but is a royal PITA to keep clean and minty. Skycraper is classy and worlds easier for maintenance. But looks are subjective. Just get the M Sport Professional package if you want chrome delete. |

Black vehicles always look amazing right after being freshly detailed, however, it doesn’t take long for them to look dirty again. Plus they are quick to show any swirl marks in the paint.
I’d say if you are one to car about how clean the car looks and aren’t up for the maintenance that comes along with owning a black vehicle, then go with SG.

Before ordering carbon black I made sure my dealership offers free car washes to customers.

Dealership is one of the last places I’d want to be washing my car…

It’s not even having to do with how clean it appears but more the fact of them not taking much care to ensure they aren’t putting a bunch of swirl marks in the paint or gloss black bits.

I went all black everything - first time doing it - no ragerts I dont need it to be perfect, clean it regularly enough and its fine. The m sport bumper rubbed me the wrong way and the black keeps it much cleaner imho. Skyskraper grey is a phenomenal color and generally looks incredible but theres too much contrast with that bumper for me.

I went with skyscraper Gray over coffee sensafin. I’ve done black cars before; never again. I’ll be replacing the rear badging with gloss black, smoking out the side markers and putting the OEM splitter on the front. I went with the bi color wheels because I’m not a fan of black wheels. You can’t see the detail and they blend too much with the tire. Sorry these pics aren’t better - they’re the only ones I have as it’s been raining since I picked it up.

I have a 1 year old 2023 X5 that was ordered/purchased new. Have gone through at least 1 automatic car wash per week (same place) and no swirl marks or scratches. About 2 months after I got the car I put 2 coats of Griots 3 in 1 ceramic spray on, repeat in 6 months. The auto car wash I use have monthly packages and I opted for the highest package which includes a ceramic finish then rinse. Don't know if that helps or it's the Griots 3 in 1 ceramic spray but like I said, Black Sapphire Metallic and no swirl marks after at least 52 auto car washes. I do not hand wash any of my vehicles.

If I had to choose between black and grey, I can say black is super elegant, but super hard to mantain clean, specially if you live where half of the year there is plenty of mud and rain/snow. Grey is somehow less striking IMO, but way easier to mantain clean. So my choice would be grey.

If you get it ceramic coated or even waxed, black is pretty easy to care for. But will NEVER be as easy as gray. I was torn between these two colors as well. Just thought the wheels I liked most looked better with a dark color.
