M60 Houston Colorado road trip
Just wanted to share a few comments on the M60 road trip completed this past Sunday (3-16). I’ve done this trip 4 times over the last couple of years in my wife’s 45e so was a good comparison. We departed Houston at 2 PM on the 7th and stopped at Amarillo that night onto Steamboat on the 8th. Completed the Bridgestone Winter driving course on the 9th then drove to Winter Park that evening (fantastic mountain drive) and stayed for the week skiing.
I’ve attached the return trip summary which was completed in a straight shot by myself (my son defected to Miami 1/2 way through the trip 😉. It says 15 hrs 47 mins but I am calling it 14 hours 17 mins as I was siting idling on the I-25 for 1 hr 30 after a couple of idiots went flying past me and 10 minutes later caused a 7 car pile up after hitting ice just sth of Denver. I enjoyed the drive so much. This car just purrs along. I did not experience any of the twitchy steering others have mentioned. It drives straight as a die and is very predictable. DAP - j used this a lot but not the assist plus as much due to it being speed limited at 85 - however I still got a lot of use out of the assist plus and found it very useful - particularly in heavy rain south of Fort Worth at night. Provided confidence and allowed me to focus on traffic and other obstacles - was a real help in that situation. Obviously you still need to remain alert. I had the reported confusion (not in the night rain scenario) with mixing up lines occasionally but intervention was easy and sorted it out. I think it’s good system. Through the mountains I loved the sure footed handling and you forget how much power you have until you come up on others battling away up the hills. Absolutely love the B&W with Spotify and USB music - as well as listening to my F1 podcasts and practise sessions. I cruised at 92 on the way up and after being stuck in that traffic jam bumped that to 96 when possible and feasible on the open highways (always carefully respectful of speeds in towns). I use an Escort radar detector and it is definitely worth the money. So, about 2,200 miles round trip and averaged 19 mph. For the trip back 1,097 miles and back and 19.8 mph. Love the car - was a pleasure. Pirelli Scorpion A/S on factory 21’s performed great in some really nasty conditions.

Very inspiring. I have an LCI xDrive 40i but will assign most of those values to my vision. Today was first day of retirement. We live east of the Mississippi but have a daughter in Austin, TX and one in Boise, ID. Not having to be back Monday morning means we may no longer fly the route(s) and your narrative confirms.

This is nice to read, while I’m not fanatical about mileage it’s nice to read that the 60 gets that good a mileage, I would have expected closer to 15/16 with a 4.4 V8. Have you ever verified your readings manually (miles divided by gallons used)?
On another subject, have you verified your speedometer readings? My (deceased) wife’s 328 and 128 were off by 10% (it was within BMW’s allowable error at the time) and it irritated the hell out of me. I always check speedometers using a WAAS enabled GPS now.

Nice write up. I’ve enjoyed every mile of the 8400 miles I’ve put on myM60i. It’s the most refined performance SUV I’ve ever owned.

Only verification of speed was against the roadside speed check displays and according to those my Speedo runs about 2 mph over consistently.

Every BMW we've ever owned runs 2 mph over. Not sure why. Maybe because they think everyone speeds in their cars and acts like idiots so they're trying to help us out lol.

It is due to European regulations. ECE-R39 states that the speedometer may never show less than the actual speed (or more than actual by 10% + 4km/h) so BMW, and some other manufactures, put a factor in their calculations to raise the speed shown.

Love hearing that these are great trip vehicles. I'm about to do a short one between Dallas and Houston this coming weekend and am anxious to see how it performs. This will be my first short haul trip since buying it.

I did several road trips from central Texas to Colorado for snowboarding as well. But the last week I decided not to torture myself by 15hrs driving and just took the flight to Denver. Essentially what can I say based on my experience - yes, driving X5 on half empty highways in the middle of nowhere (ports to plains corridor) with DAP is very relaxing and smooth (making this car good for road trips), but in my opinion it’s not worth it at all for several reasons:
1. If you have 21” or 22” wheels - there are basically no oem sized all season tires, so you have to buy an additional 20” all season set and store it just for these trips. 2. Snowfalls can happen - and if you are not going to store your car in the garage or covered spot - be prepared to clean the snow with a brush, which could make tiny swirls on your paint (especially individual). 3. Xdrive is a good awd system, but this is not a proper car for severe snowstorms. You’ll likely stuck in a deep snow due to relatively low clearance and lack of offroad options which can help you to get out. 4. Salt and deicing reagents are not good for your car’s body so you have to take it to a good car wash immediately after returning back home. 5. You’re going to leave your luxury X5 on the ski resort parking lots with tight spaces basically among trucks, 4Runners and Subarus, where all the people aren’t careful and can easily scratch your car with their gear just walking by your car. I just rented a Jeep Wrangler with 3k miles on it and couldn’t be happier. It performed great in the snowstorm conditions (last week Denver area had a record amount of snow), never stuck anywhere, it drives confidently on the snow covered highways and it's just a real utility car that you don't mind getting into in dirty and wet ski clothes, without fear of getting something scratched or getting a chip on the windshield. No hustle with keeping your car clean and safe. |

Good to know the reason. I actually like it to be honest because it does give me a buffer when I am over the limit.

I used to think my dream garage was a luxury SUV and a 911. I currently have the x5 and a 2022 Wrangler 4xe and love the combo!

I take good care of my car but I also want to use it so wasn’t worried about a bit of snow and light brushing - but yes it got a good detailing return. I found myself in some decent snow and it was very capable - as noted lots of snow I that way - and it was parked outside. I generally took the bus to the hill but when I did drive I parked in the undercover parking and was able to find good spots. A picture of the snow covering 👍 By the way - I am see remote parking to drive it out of that spot so I didn’t have to walk through a foot of snow.
