I don't think this is the CEL issue?

But after restarting the car the orange wrench and messages were gone. So do I have a problem or was it a software gremlin?
Those were the service messages that I got repeatedly that resulted in two software loads and an eventual SME replacement.

This is the first time I got this. Restarted the car a few times now and it doesn't reappear.

What is a SME replacement?

Funny thing is I unlocked my car and thought strange the vivace welcome light animation doesn't work anymore, I got in the car and saw the orange wrench and messages.
Now I don't have that orange wrench and messages anymore and welcome light animation works again

So drivetrain and light animation are connected?

It is the battery management module. They aren't directly connected. More than likely the error caused other errors. You may want to try restarting iDrive as that may bring back your lighting.

Do we know if replacing the module once has worked for most people or no?

I think that one replacement has worked for more people than it didn't. Given there are various issues it is tough to really track down what the solution and what the cause is.

My SME took two replacements. So far, I haven’t had an issue since the 2nd was put in, but it’s only been a month. I’m swapping this out with a ‘25 next month anyway.

Update: I just got in my car and another CEL! I must’ve angered the CEL gods by posting that I haven’t had an issue in a month!

Haven't had an issue since my SME was replaced a few months ago.
Even before that it was just a CEL that came and went. No drivetrain issues, or issues with driving the car.

[QUOTE=nikhilabburi;30998227]My X5 50e, which was built during Week 46 and delivered on January 5th, has already accumulated 4,000 miles. Unfortunately, the vehicle's check engine light is now illuminated due to the CEL issue.

The dealer finally fixed the car by changing the expansion value. It's running well now, so hopefully the check engine light won't come back on again.

BMWNA offered me $1,500 for all the trouble.

Joined before getting 50e.
Got it in Nov 23, have done 12k miles so far.
1 x major (red) drive train issue that went to BMW; they said there was no issue but if it happened again come back for a software update that’s due in Q1!
I’ve had two yellow drive train warnings since, and a HV fault also but car has driven fine all the way through.
When I got the red drivetrain error the car still drove fine except no EV power, and once I turned the car off, locked it and then started it again the fault was gone. They still got the car recovered from my house and took it in for a checkup.
Other than that the car is a dream, total mile muncher and decent economy too (~60 miles to a full charge in winter).

FYI, if they end up buying back the vehicle they will take that $1500 back too. Hopefully the repair was all you needed and this won't be an issue.

Dealer upgraded to 03/2024.35 and cleared the drivetrain and high voltage error codes. They said nothing was wrong with hardware parts.
I have to keep an eye on it. Probably a software glitch

I must say the error messages in the myBMW app also showed SOLVED since 2 days ago.

I submitted a request to BMWNA for the buyback of the vehicle, but unfortunately, it was denied. As a result, they are sending a check for $1,500. BMWNA advised me that if the issue persists, I should reopen the case with them to explore alternative options.

This is my second 50e, and the first one had the same issues. At that time, BMWNA offered me trade assistance to replace the current vehicle.

Got my first CEL yesterday. 9,547 miles without issue.

Dropped off at dealer this am.

I found 2 items of interest:
1) Service Advisor met me at my car (unusual based upon my experience), wanting to know if the CEL was still on. He knows there's been issues with the 50e's
2) He said I'm 1 of 2 50e's coming in today for the same issue (CEL).

Will advise what they find.

According the dealer, the issue was the HV battery unit refrigerant shutoff valve (see pic).

He goes on to say in the video, that's it's a common failure for these cars and this fix should last. If it throws another fault, they will proceed with replacing the CCU (Common Charging Unit).

Likely picking up tomorrow. I'll keep you all posted.

interesting issue that cropped up at ~4K miles, in addition to the earlier CEL, the DSC control unit had a short with the short range radar control unit due to wiring issues. Hopefully no other electrical issues crops up but not looking great for future reliability.

4,100 miles on the car.
No CEL/drivetrain issues at all however I have had a flashing red light on the charger and warning saying charging is not possible.

Also lost 25% battery most of the winter in Minnesota in Garage. Some quirky things from time to time but otherwise no problems (knock wood)..

Thanks for doing this Turtle!
