Alexa won't let you control Spotify in BWM?

I have Alexa working on both our X5M and X5 M50i. Neither one will allow Alexa to call upon and control spotify (i.e. Alexa play XYZ on Spotify). It says this platform is not supported. Bizarre since Spotify app is built into bmw, it is on my iphone, it is on carplay and it is linked properly to alexa (works on all our home echos).

Is it just that the Alexa API in the BMW's simply cuts off access to Spotify API's in the car?

Alexa isn't currently designed to operate vehicle functions or apps; that's a job for the BMW personal assistant "hey, BMW." we can't tell Alexa to adjust the temperature, call up Experience Modes, etc. it's very likely developers haven't gone that far as to integrate the two API despite them both being available in the same vehicle.
