Road trip recommendations.

Knowing this site is mainly frequented by our US friends, we are looking for some advise.
We are planning a Us road trip next June.
We are flying into Washington DC and returning from Atlanta and would like to do the Skyline drive and North and South Carolina.
Any recommendations gratefully received.
Unfortunately we won’t have the X5 with us but will look at renting a large SUV.

Tail of the dragon would be a nice scenic route to go down and depending on which vehicle you have for the road trip would be quite fun to drive despite the absurdly low speed limit. Outside of that the usual stops would be the capitol and it's landmarks, ocean city md, south of the border etc.
