BMW gets their money when it is wholesaled to the dealer. The dealer's profit margin still remains slim. The deal you received on your X5 has nothing to do with this article. By the time you take delivery, BMW has already spent their share.
What's the profit margin on a bed? Pair of shoes? Gutters? Why get hung up on what BMW makes per car? I'm laughing as I think about it...it would be interesting to see the profit margins in the industry of the fortunate folks on this forum. |

I prefer the Porsche Cayman body style. It's unfortunate they don't put the six cylinder in it any longer.

Important to remember that the 16% profit is between the manufacturing cost to dealer invoice, not manufacturing cost to MSRP. BMW makes their money when they "sell" the car to the dealers.

Perhaps you should tell us what discounts and how you got; otherwise it's like telling people life is beautiful after winning a big lottery.

This is surprising and MB should feel pretty bad since a comparably equipped MB GLE costs more. I hate MB SUVs. Finally convinced my wife to unload her GLS for X7. They drive like boats and even more disconnected steering than an X5.

The X5 does 0-60 in 5s. That's pretty fast for an SUV. I'll bet you dollars to donuts the Lincoln can't do it any faster and will likely be a couple tenths slower. |

Also, the advertised power numbers are 335hp vs 523hp. Remember the M50i uses the new V8 from the M850i. So we're talking nearly a 200hp gap here. Considering that, $15k seems like a steal. People routinely spend more money for less power. |

X5 was launched for the first time in 1999 with 4.4 liter V8 engine. It was intended to be a "no compromises" luxury SAV (to quote BMW).
One year later, 3.0 inline 6 cylinder was added. BMW X5 is now in its fourth iteration. In 2002 - only 2 years after the initial launch, 42K X5 were sold in the US with 55K sold in 2015. X5 is a rare example of a vehicle designed for the right market segment from the very beginning. That's where profitability comes from. |

No suprise for the 911 you probably have to pay extra to get power brake and power steering. The base radio must be am with 2 speakers. You need to add 30-40-50000$ in extra to have a car with proper equipment in relation to the MSRP. Recent bmw are going this way the option list get longer and longer bringning more and more profit.

So, if I got my math right, Porsche makes an average $63,600 USD profit on every 911 they sell
That's completely bonkers

I'm actually glad they make a lot of money on X5.
It just means it's a great product selling at high volume, so no need for them to cut corners trying to save some costs. Thanks to this, we can expect that in the future they will focus even more on it, increase development budget and make it even better. Also, probably we might even again get a new model sooner than expected. Who needs a facelift, just give us a completely new model 😀 |
