That's proper felt-taping. Reminds me of my E90, I think by the time I was done chasing down each of the annoying little rattles I had gone through most of the interior assemblies. Was tight and quiet even at 100k tho.

Follow Up Video

So I've made a video but I didn't eliminate the noise completely. I had to make a further adjustment after I stopped the video but it illustrates the process and you can hear the improvement.

I've had to make this adjustment every few days, each time making an incremental wind (out) because my office car park is a multi-storey so the car chassis flexes putting pressure on the tailgate. I also open and close my boot eights times per day which contributes to the misalignment.

What I've since learned is that there is only so far you can adjust the boot stop before it becomes counter productive. This is because the further you wind out the boot stop, the less stable it becomes and subsequently starts to contribute to the movement of the tailgate (generating the noise).

A better approach at this point is to wind in the boot stop until it stops wobbling and then apply electrical tape to the boot catch that presses against the boot stop. I'm going to monitor this and see how often I have to make adjustments (add tape).

I'll add a link to the video and post a picture of the tape.

I hope now it stays like this...

where did you spray all of this?

Can you please specify what type of a key and which size did you use for adjusting those boot stops?

It is a 12 point socket, 20mm. Electrical tape is a better approach as the more you adjust boot stops, the more they wobble and contribute to the noise.

Some have suggested applying black scotch tape over rear seat latch. Before doing that, I gently tapped everything in the trunk and found the push button to release and lock the cargo cover is creating that rattle or that plastic grill next to it (see photo). Any suggestions what can I do about it? I would hate to take it to dealer and waste 2-3 days for them to figure out. Thanks
My November 2020 built 45e currently has a similar wedge of paper in the cover release button. At the moment it seems to be the source of my annoying rattle but I need a little more time to be certain before I ask BMW to fix it.

Maybe we should try it this way. I am waiting for a 20 mm key to arrive and than I'll try it. Probably the right way is to wind boot stops in and not out.

You can do it by hand.

Just checked my car - I have movement and can recreate a very similar noise by pressing the tailgate over the right hand rubber stop.

My car is in for another warranty matter tomorrow so I will ask them to include this adjustment.

Odd. I am able to adjust mine by hand and on previous X5 as well. Just twist the top portion and you will feel notches. Count the notches as you turn so you can match the opposite side.

When I found mine today I noticed that the left hand side of my car is free to turn by hand, however the right hand side seems to be fully screwed down tight and I can't turn it by hand - almost as though it was never adjusted in the factory.

I wonder if it's always the same side that's been missed?

Hi, have you finally solved the issue by using that electrical tape? Did the sound reappear?

i had a creaking from the trunk area and did this method of tightening down (the paper was originally very tight on both sides, would rip if i pulled) the rubber nub until the paper pulled out easily. Its hard to gauge how loose/tight would eliminate the creak, but i'll be going for a test drive tomorrow and reporting back

My 2019 X5 has interior rattles that drive me crazy. There are at least two. One from the rear at the other is hard to tell. They are heard on surface streets and not so much at freeway speeds. The are high pitched, almost a vibration. They sound like they are exposed and not muffled by a dash or seat. The car only has 16,000 miles on it and has always been garaged and washed by hand. It is in perfect condition, except for the rattles. I am lost as to what to do. It is, no doubt out of warranty for this kind of thing. I did call the dealer once and left a message but did not hear back. This is not acceptable for a car of that caliber.
