M60 harsh ride on 22's

Picked up a barely used m60 in Nardo Grey w 22" M Double Spoke wheels. Amazing machine but even in Comfort mode, I do find it pretty harsh going over anything other than smooth pavement. Granted, I am coming from a Jeep Rubicon which just basically ignore speed bumps, pot holes or any other road irregularity. The m60 is much more smooth and quiet on tarmac but I'm trying to get some more compliance over uneven pavement. Has anyone gone from the 22's to the factory 20's with the All Season run flats? Does the taller sidewall of those tires add compliance / smoother ride over uneven surfaces? If it does, are there any special considerations switching from one to the other or is it as simple as a direct swap. TIA

I have an M50i on 22" summer wheels and 20" winter wheels. I can tell you that there is a HUGE difference in comfort between the sizing of the wheels on the car.

With the suspension setting on comfort, the 22" wheels feel less compliant than when I have my 20" wheels on in the sport suspension setting.

I have a 2023 M50i on 22's with air suspension and there is no issue with the ride of the car even on our (UK) roads.

Is it as simple as take one set off and install the other? I'm wondering about speedo calibration if the sets end up being a different outside diameter. Thanks for your reply.

Good to know. I would have ordered the A.S., but sadly that was not in the cards.

The aspect ratio of the tire will keep the circumference the same - so no issues.

The 22" wheels would use 275/35 R22 (F), and 315/30 R22 (R) tires

The 20's would use 275/45 R20 tires

I went from 21s on my M50i to 22s on current M60i, felt no difference and on base suspension. Would have gone with 23s if they were an option.
The 20s would likely be "softer" if that is what one really needs but will have a totally different look. 22s look really great on these X5/X6s.

Agreed that the 22's suit the car nicely and look better than 20's but I would give up looks for comfort at this stage. Best of both worlds would be 22's with a taller ratio tire.

There's the comfort component - but also the tire replacement cost.

The 22's look great on the vehicle - but for me I'd opt for the 21's.

I'd rather have 23s. There was a post in one of the threads in this section where a guy went with aftermarket 23" wheels and it just looked incredible.

I would say definitely go test drive for yourself. Because one’s harsh ride is another one’s floaty ride. Can never go by another’s preference.

Are the 20" factory wheels only available from the BMW dealer? My thought is to keep the 22's until the tires need changing and then switch to the factory 20's with square setup.

Exactly. We have 22s on our 2022 and have no issue with the ride. And, that is driving on Los Angeles freeways. This is the first time I ordered a car with 22 inch rims and was concerned. I am very happy with the looks and ride.

Ride is very subjective. The taller the sidewall, the more opportunity for it to act as a 'spring' and shock absorber. Depends on what you want. Personally, I don't obsess over what my vehicles look like, and look more for function that matches my desires. Whatever your priorities are, there will be tradeoffs. Mine is usually parked in the garage, and the only time I look at it is when walking up to it outside...can't see the tires or wheels while driving, and I could care less about what others might think.

Again, personal priorities...whatever makes you happy, but weigh the consequences. Air suspension can help with those sharper impacts, but again, come with consequences.

If you’re open to a used set, there are usually many of them for sale on the classified section of this forum including low mileage take offs.

Glad to hear that you don't "obsess" over looks. Neither do I or most others here I am sure who don't need a lecture on practicality.
Many of us also live in climates where it never snows or freezes and the roads are not an obstacle course of 18" deep potholes.
You do you, the rest of us can make a decision on wheels regardless of whether we can see them while driving or not.
How many guys spending the balance of 100 grand on a premium BMW SUV prefer a wheel that looks like this?

Maybe there’s something wrong with the tires themselves or the pressure?
I was amazed with the compliant ride and overall comfort when I test drove an M60i X5 with m performance pro suspension (base steel struts with active anti roll bars) on 22” wheels. I took the car out to a variety of places and had a friend drive my 7series (air suspension with anti roll bars on that one, plus 21” wheels with OEM tires). We went over smooth tarmac and broken up side roads, etc. I came out thinking the X5 was a better ride than my 7 series (it was 2021 model with less than 30k miles on it)

So, as someone said above, what some perceive as hard or harsh, others will consider too soft / floaty

If you consider the ride harsh, I’d start with checking if tires are okay, then pressure, then maybe do the strut test. Obviously, changing summer to winter tires (if that’s applicable where you live) will also help determine if wheels are a factor

In any case, I hope you will find a setup that makes the car fit your expectations

We have 22s on our M50i. The ride is excellent, but we are in FL which is well run and we have overall very good roads. Like when we have a rough road, it's the exception to the rule.

Exactly. Florida is a very well run state and free of so many taxes and ridiculous regulations that other states hammer residents with.
Great roads for sure.

It shouldn’t be a problem and it’s a direct swap. If you have air suspension though, it might be worth disabling it before you throw your car on a lift or on a jack, otherwise it may throw out an error code.
