So my wife's X6 M50i with the M Sport brakes are totally done at 13k miles. The front's actuality wore through the wear sensor. I probably should have replaced the front rotors as well but they weren't that bad and the lease is up in April 23. I've never had a car eat brakes like this. Is this normal? My X70 M50i has about the same miles and pads are just fine.

Maybe she's riding the brakes... Keeping a foot on brake pedal too much that is.

That seems odd for normal driving. I've got about 12k miles on my X6 and they've got plenty of pad left. I live in a hilly area too.

Definitely seems odd... I'm usually pretty hard on brakes, yet @17k miles have like 85% left

Are the pads actually worn? My X5M triggered the pad warning light at about 14k miles which I thought was strange. After careful inspection the pads still had PLENTY material left but the front sensor corroded which was what triggered the warning in the dash. $30 new sensor fixed the issue for me.

Im at 15K miles on my X6M and have plenty of brake left and I drive hard.

Your wife is 100% riding her brakes around town instead of just letting the car engine brake.

The pads were definitely worn. Fronts were almost to the the metal. The rear brakes were about 75% worn. The brakes started squealing earlier this year and the dealer said she needed new pads and rotors all around. I said they are trying to rip you off and I'll look at them. Sure enough they were right.

Anyway, the brakes are still squealing sometimes. The rotors show some wear but they didn't look like they needed replaced to me. Looks like I might need to go ahead and order some rotors which are not cheap.

makes sense to me probably its entirely caused by her driving habits. she probably guns that V8 when the light turns green then slams on the brakes when she needs to and on and on. just a guess.

Just had my M50i in today. 32k miles and I have 4mm rear and 5mm front. Rep recommended a change for the rears and said I could wait for the fronts. I would say my driving style is moderate.

Way back when I was learning to drive, I took a driver's ed class so I could get my license earlier. The instructor kept an empty glass milk bottle (remember when they would deliver milk!?) on his side of the footwell. Every time you knocked the bottle over, you'd lose 5-points for the day. The goal was to be smooth in accelerating, turning, and stopping. You didn't hold up traffic doing this either, and it was much more pleasant on any passengers, too. On my first BMW, it had about 75K miles on it when it was sold...still had a lot of brake pad left all around. Smooth is the key.

It's a big car. Keep in mind any of the driving assistants (cruise control, and frontal collision sensors) will apply the brakes.

Good for her for driving the car the way it was meant to be driven. BMWs need to be driven hard and not babied so much.

Slap in some new pads and carry on.

She doesn't use cruise. Just drives it really hard. My X7 M50i goes in this month for a state inspection and I have 15,000 miles on it. I did go through two sets of tires (OEM and Winter) so I'll see what they say about my brakes.

She's def hard on the brakes! I just had my 10k service done on my 22 45e and they stated I had 10/32's left, meaning basically only 20% worn. While the 45e is heavier than the 50i, the regen brakes help a lot . . . I have m Sport and tow pack, so I think the rotors and pads are slightly bigger than those that don't; but the 50i likely uses the same larger ones I'd think.

I had all my pads and rotors replaced because they were squealing like a pig. Was done at about 20k miles and i dont even drive my x5 2019 40i that hard.

Ran me damn near $2k too replace everything at the dealer.

I had "stuck" caliper that caused it to eat up front pad on one side. I didn't notice anything driving but dealer replaced caliper and obviously pads on both sides under warranty.

My wife's 2017 x5 40e had 80k on it and we never replaced the brakes and the pads were covered by the 3 year 36 miles factory warranty never got to use the brake pad warranty.

I don't know why no one mentioned it, but one thing I thought of:

Left foot braking.

Maybe she's hovering her left foot over the brake pedal, and applying some pressure constantly.

One stuck caliper, possible. All 4 stuck calipers, highly unlikley. I also think driving style.

Even manual driver, left foot is trained to depress fast and hard, but release slow and soft for clutch operation. The exact opposite of how a brake paddle should be operated. Unless she is well trained on performance driving, highly unlikely an average driver will use left foot on brake.

Yeah something doesn't add up with this story. I drive very aggressive and never replaced brakes that soon.
