It doesn’t appear to be. I am experiencing this on my 12 Pro in both our x5 and my Raptor. I had notifications come thru for a random day or so, then nothing for the rest. Definitely seems like an iOS 18 bug.

Announce Message will read all messages, whether you want it or not.
This can be very annoying. The earlier feature where you just got the notification and when you clicked it would read the message was far better. This way you can decide which messages you want to listen to. Apple and/or BMW need to fix this. |

This is still not fixed as of iOS 18.2 developer beta 1.
File apple feedback if this is bothering you, it's all we can do. The more people that complain, the more priority it gets. |

I was hoping iOS 18.1.1 and the latest BMW iDrive update would fix the problem.
But mine is still there. :-( Did the problem get fixed for anyone else? |

not fixed for me either on my '20 X5 or my '25 Z4. This is a problem across the BMW line. Surely with all the people here someone somewhere must have connections with Apple employees working on iOS??

We're seeing some progress - but weird progress.
On my wife's 2024 LCI X6 and with an iPhone 16 Pro in the car, visible notifications of incoming iPhone texts are briefly appearing atop the default BMW screen, but they last for just a few seconds and without audio alerts, so they are easy to miss. On my 2023 iX M60 with the iPhone 16 Pro in the car, there's been a drastic change. In recent days, with the BMW screen in place and CarPlay underneath it, incoming iPhone texts are announced with a loud BONG! and immediately read aloud through the BMW speakers. This is an improvement - unless someone is in the car who shouldn't be hearing the incoming text over which you have no control. Also, if I respond to a text, all sorts of lights start flashing on the screen as I dictate - a rather nice new feature.

I have medication alerts coming in when listening to Sirius but no iMessage alerts. Weird to have one but not the other.

This is how it SHOULD work and has worked since the inception of Carplay. It worked like this with my iphone 13 pro max that I upgraded to iOS 18.0 prior to upgrading my phone to the 16 pro max. I've never gotten the overlay notifications on my new phone. Not sure how your wife's phone is working correctly, maybe she only has iOS 18.0?

interesting, I’ve been using CarPlay since Dec 2020. I’ve had it set to announce new messages, and it’s done so through all the iDrive and iOS updates I’ve done since and even now with 11/2023.50 and iOS 18.1.1. I’ve never received a notification for any text message and didn’t know this was possible while connected via CarPlay.
I do receive notifications for text messages when connecting my iPhone via iDrive (bluetooth), but I rarely connect this way |

I don't like to have it set to just announce new messages in the car because it invariably interrupts something I'm listening to but I wish it would at least chime or let it buzz through to my watch so I know I got a message. The pop up is easily missed. My workaround is to make sure the Messages app is in the left hand stack of recently used apps in the carplay interface so I can see the badge indicator.

personally, I rarely have the CarPlay GUI displayed, so the badge count wouldn’t work for me. I always listen to music but never found the texts obtrusive. if anything, texts take priority over the tunes. if I were listening to a podcast or audio book, then I could possibly find the interruptions annoying, but I don’t do either of those
but my question is are we absolutely certain the iPhone was connected via CarPlay, not bluetooth, when text messages showed in the notifications field? cuz again, the only time I’ve seen text notification in iDrive was when my iPhone was connected via bluetooth Last edited by nZtiZia; 12-04-2024 at 04:48 PM.. |

Really what carplay is good for is creating ad hock music playlists. the way siri reads messages leaves a lot to be desired. But I still need that feature to work like it used to because I may get a message from someone at work that I need to respond to. in any case, since 2020 I've only ever connected my phone via carplay and whenever I'd get a new text, I'd get a visual notification. everythiing has gone awry since iOS 18.

Also don't be confused with what we are describing. We are not saying it showed until the iDrive Notifications area, we are talking about the banner being displayed across the bottom of the screen saying there is a new message and from who.

too bad iOS 18 junked this feature up cuz i was hoping someone could show me this in action. and you don’t recall enabling any special settings in iDrive or on your iPhone? there’s gotta be something on my end for me to do as I’ve never seen these notifications prior to iOS 18 on my current settings

safe to say there are use cases amongst us that benefit from the text message notification while in CarPlay. for me, it’s a non-issue. relegating CarPlay’s use to creating and hocking playlists is simply a matter of opinion. again, I have no issues with Siri announcing any messages aloud because in my opinion, having it read aloud is a safety feature of CarPlay. reading messages on the control display takes your eyes off the road. BTW you can disable Siri from asking if you want to reply every time she’s done reading the message Last edited by nZtiZia; 12-05-2024 at 09:16 AM.. |

I have been purposely delaying iOS 18 for my 13 Pro because of this. iOS 17.2 has been flawless so far. iOS 18 on my iPad Pro has had all kinds of issues with core apps I use daily and didn’t want to fuss with this on my cell.

oh! can you take a screenshot or video of these notifications and any settings you’re aware of that enabled them?

not notification on top of the control display (that’s where I see the messages when iPhone connected via bluetooth) but the pop up on the iPhone itself? and when it used to work, the CarPlay GUI is on the display in your vehicle to see them since that’s essentially the iPhone screen? these are my Messages notification settings. anything different than yours that could explain why I never see them? or likely I never see them because I don’t ever leave the CarPlay GUI on display? (iDrive home page with widgets is my default screen) Last edited by nZtiZia; 12-05-2024 at 10:39 AM.. |
