Reinator and secondary cat delete has saved this X5 from going back on the “for sale” market

So... I got my new double H-pipe welded up today. I need to order a couple of lap clamps for the rear section..... but I'm pretty excited to get this on the car. I think it's going to sound pretty vicious.

I'll post up when I get them installed. But I've done a ton of research, and watched a ton of videos.

I don't like the crackly sound that others have after installing dual straight pipes.

Not crazy about the higher pitched, raspier tone associated with X pipes.

An H-pipe is generally more associated with 70s era muscle cars, and has a deeper, blurblier tone. A double H-pipe "should" eliminate any raspiness that may be left over.

Fingers crossed.

Haven't had time, because I require the assistance of a pro-welder. I can do small welding jobs, but I'm enlisting the help from a pro on this one.

Tuesday it goes on. I'll post a video... promise

Video is uploading to YouTube as we speak. Will post in a few minutes.

US spec (no OPF sensors or secondary cats) Stock downpipes, stock muffler with flapper valves welded open permanently.

Resonator deleted. Custom 3" double H-pipe installed, with cross sections 12" apart from one another. Cold start.

Happy with tone.. very rumbly and low
Happy with the lack of crackles and pops (I don't care for that)
Not as happy with "volume". I expected more. Barely noticeable inside the car. Zero drone whatsoever.
Noticeable 800-2000 rpms.... and at full acceleration. Otherwise, no difference in volume from stock.

No problem. Hopefully it helps someone make a decision that suits whatever "they" want"

Resonator delete, dual straight pipes - louder, poppy, crackly
Resonator delete, H-pipes - not quite as loud, rumblier, no pops/crackles

Resonator Delete, X-pipe - Still waiting on sound clip

Hey Matt,

When you shot the clip, did you start it up in comfort ? Also, on the rev's....comfort or sport plus?

I coded my car to start in Sport Individual, which (for me) is Sport Suspension, and "Comfort" everything else.

With that said though, my flapper valves are welded open full time, so it doesn't really matter in my case. There's no difference in the way my car sounds outside in different modes. I guess that would be the equivalent of Sport+ mode on cars that still have working flapper valves.

The only difference I've ever noticed.... is the "fake" noise coming through the speakers in Sport+.... which I've reduced as much as possible in idrive anyway.

Like you, I was hoping for a little more V8 burble but that said, it’s difficult to get the true sound from speakers.

Hey Matt,

Like you, I permanently opened both actuators / values. For me there is a major difference in sound from comfort to sport plus.

Additional, there is also a slight adjustment in the exhaust in the different "engine sounds" setting.

Tried filming a video today with my good camera but had the wrong setting on mic.

I get a lot more growl in sport plus setting than I do in comfort, again, with values open.

I hope to upload video soon.

You and I have the same mindset in the sport individual, I have the same settings. Now I just need to code it in. I assume Bimmercode?

I used carly for my F15.

I really don't think that is correct. The "fake" sound inside the car changes when switching between modes...... and when driving, Sport and Sport+ holds the gears higher so the engine is turning faster.

And of course, the flapper valves operate differently between modes, unless you have them permanently opened.

But I really don't think the "engine and exhaust" performs or sounds any differently. Sport and Sport+ adjusts throttle response, and tells the transmission to hold gears longer and shift quicker..... but it doesn't change the timing/boost.... which is the only thing that would change the sound of your exhaust.

If your valves are opened full time..... and you are just revving the engine in Neutral..... I'm about 99% sure all your modes will sound the exact same.

So let's talk about this resonator. I can't see how it really does much of anything. Honestly..... seems like a bit of over-engineering and extra weight.

And.... why does one side have more baffle holes than the other side?

The world will never know.

I thought the fake sound only worked / is active, in none 50i models as the setting in mine makes no difference what's so ever

Matt, your an American in Belgium but what country / market does your car originate from? I assume you purchased it in Belgium and didn't bring it over the pond

I notice the sound coming through my speakers SIGNIFICANTLY when I set I drive to adjust depending on mode. It actually sounds really good.

To me.... it's like wearing a fake watch. Just because it sounds good.... I still know it's fake, and it drives me nuts. I keep mine on "reduced" at all times.

Okay....please excuse my poor camera footage and zero editing.

Values are open and completely disconnected from the electronics of the car.

Apparently my neighbors have an issue with me revving a little too many times. The 1st take I messed up so I had to do a second take.

I also filmed in 1080 with Nikon but mic boom wasn't as clear as Samsung S20.

I'm ordering a better mic this week.

I also shortened the video from what I planned. My notes are in the description of the YouTube link.

There are definitely more burbles and crackles in sport plus than in comfort with values opened on both.

Great video and breakdown!
When starting the car in sports plus its a higher rev start is how I would describe it.
