Running boards
Does anyone have running boards on their G05? How are they?
My wife has trouble climbing in and out of the vehicle, and I think the running boards may help with that. They were not available when we purchased, so I am thinking of ordering and installing them (not 100% sure if it's possible to install outside of the factory). |

I have them and find them not very useful. My previous vehicle (GMC Yukon) had power deploying running boards that dropped below the level of the floor providing a step to get inside. The X5's running board is fixed and at the same level as the interior's floor and so is not useful to me.

We have it. it is at about the same level as the floor, so does not really help my mother-in-law getting in or out of the car.
I have air suspension, so lowering the car for that help a lot more. The running board does help reducing mud splash from the road + keep some cars' door from hitting the side of the X5. I believe it does looks good on X5. |

I tried them at the dealer and found that it made it way harder to get in and out if you don't use them, and it didn't help me at all to use them.

Before we ordered ours we test drove an Xline with running boards. It was impossible for us to exit the vehicle without scuffing the backs of our ankles, so we decided not to add them to our order.

Same goes here, my wife and I tested getting in and out of one with and one without the running boards as we thought they would help us. We're 5'6" and 5'8" and they made it worse. Actually, my wife's legs got black and blue from all the trials we did which basically amounted to a good day going about your errands, getting in and out to go into stores, etc. I like the way they look but we've ruled them out in favor of air suspension.

I agree, on this G05 X5 and my previous E70 X5, they running boards aren't terribly useful. They also collect snow and mud and have to get cleaned off by boot, to get the door shut in heavy winter. (must probably won't experience that.)
They are useful for access a roof rack or washing the top of the car. |

I like the way the running boards look. I had a 4Runner TRD PRO previously and running boards made it way easier to get in. I would step up on the boards and then step into the vehicle. When I tried that on my X5 I kept bumping my head - and I'm short, only 5'5". So I don't use them to get in and out. Being short I have the seat pretty high up when driving. I found it a lot easier to get in and out by lowering the seat to its lowest setting. This way I can just step in and out of the vehicle. And as Ryan said it makes accessing top of vehicle possible.

We had a Yukon Denali with the retractable running boards and the boards would start squeaking when they were deployed even though this was a new car. We no longer own this vehicle. To be fair we live a little off the beaten path and make use of some gravel roads but for our purposes I feel like the power (retractable) version of running boards would have wound up being a maintenance issue.

We just received our custom order X5-50e. We didn’t try them first in that dealer didn’t have any cars with them. We ordered our new car with them. They look nice but for us are not only not useful, but get in the way with normal entry/exit. Possibly with children or short adults they might be helpful. I’m thinking of taking them off and offer for sale. I imagine I will need to order the normal bottoms trim piece, unless someone wants to buy and include giving us their bottom trim pieces. I haven’t investigated but I imagine there are several screws or small bolts used for attachment.

I had running boards on my 2013 X5, but I didn’t get them for my 2024 50e because the seemed much more narrow than the ones I had on my 2013 (I could fit my whole foot on the 2013 running boards). The narrow ones that I saw at the dealer seemed so narrow…like my foot could just slip off of it when I’m trying to get in, so I opted out of them.
However, I’m wondering if the air suspension on the 50e can be lowered enough for my elderly mom who is under 5’ to be able to get in and out without too much trouble. My 50e should be ready in about 2 weeks and I’m counting down the days. |

I’m getting running boards on my 50e purely for aesthetic reasons. The color I chose (BRM) isn’t available with MSport, so these will help finish off the look without the ground effects of the MSport package.
