22 Inch Wheels on a M50i
Hello All,
I am at the end of my lease of an M550I X drive with the 20-inch low profile wheels and tires which has been an absolute inconvenience to me. I have had about 12 blowouts and 2 bent wheels because of the thin tires. I wanted to get an M5 with 19-inch wheels but the cabin noise is just too much in that car so I am seriously looking at the X5 M50i with 22-inch black wheels. My question is for those that actually have 22-inch wheels, do you find the ride jarring and harsh? I had an x7 loaner with 21-inch wheels and it was actually nice and composed.

I have the DHP with 22" and it drives beautifully even in the city. I don't regret getting 22" wheels ever. |

The 20" M Star-spoke bi-color wheels will be by far the toughest and quietest set up. That is what I am running and confirm they work very well for serious road trips and in mixed weather.
It’s not a huge sidewall but a lot more than on a 22” wheel. Last edited by MystroX5; 05-27-2020 at 06:32 AM.. |

Go for the 22's. Ride is excellent. Love the 747M wheels & they are only available on the M50i so you won't see them on any other X5. And as 130feetdeep said, you don't gain anything with the 21's as they are RFT.
The 20's will give the best ride, especially if you live in a pot holed state, but just look way too small on a M50i IMO. |

22's here on both my X5 and my wife's X7.
On the X5 they are non RFT and on the X7 they are RFT. Both cars drive very well and composed especially with air suspension. If you live in an area w poor roads and lots of potholes, you may want to opt for the 21 w RFT.

I have the same concern as the OP.
I have about one-week left to change my M50i order, which is currently the 22" 747 w/DHP. I live in MI, and will be swapping out for a dedicated winter set (20"s), but our roads are awful....the problem? I LOVE the look of the 747's....I think they absolutely make the suv look AMAZING. My dilemma:
Handling and appearance are important to me, but if I'm going to be hearing constant drumming and pinging coming from my wheels, I'm willing to go with a wheel I'm not crazy about to improve overall comfort. I drive 45-50 miles of mixed driving every day. |

I always thought about it like this, either get 19 inch wheels or get 22 inch wheels - everything in the middle is going to give you incremental benefits when facing pothole damage. So if that's the driving factor in your decision either go all in or all out. If you're going 40 mph and hit a pot hole, it's not going to matter if you have 22, 21 or 20s - maybe you survive with 19s, but it's all luck IMO. I wonder if there's a study where they have run wheels side by side that will show you for the same pot hole, you can hit it going 30mph with 19" wheels, 28mph with 20" wheels, 26mph with 21" wheels and 24mph with 22" wheels. That would be interesting to see. |

It is an interesting question how much an additional 1/2 inch of sidewall will help in this instance, but if you look at the 22" rear profile (30) it barely looks like there's any rubber on the wheel! Not to mention the astounding weight of the wheel itself.
The only consolation for me would be the millions of dollars and thousands of development miles engineers put on these cars developing safe and reliable suspension systems to accommodate any set-up offered. I highly doubt they would offer a set-up that's so fragile and compromised that they would risk any sort of liability or warranty recourse. I do however understand that the laws of physics cannot be overcome... |

FYI you're gaining about a half inch of sidewall going from the 20" wheels on your M550i compared to the 22's on the X5. (I'm guessing VTENGER you weren't talking about this but were referencing the difference between 22 and 21?)
Were your M550i tires runflats? Apparently you're MORE likely to bend rims on runflats vs non. The solid plastic or whatever is in the sidewall doesn't give when hitting a pothole so your rim bends instead, plus your ride is just way more harsh. I was worried about the ride with the 22's, was coming from a GLC43 with 20" wheels that had 3/4" more sidewall than the 22's. I'd argue the ride is better/less jarring on the BMW with DHP, probably due to suspension differences. Not having runflats makes a huge difference too, it wouldn't surprise me if the ride on 21's with runflats is worse than 22's without. Quote:

Thank you, gentlemen. I will test drive the car with 21 and 22-inch rims and probably go with the 22-inch black rims if I get an X5 M50.

As you can tell, rims/tires are about the same as paint, interior leather color and trim. It's really mostly about personal preference. As many have noted, there's general beliefs that the smaller rims have a quieter ride, but I think we also all hear what we want to hear some times...
I have 21", 741M rims with performance run-flats on my G06, M50i. I also have DHP and Acoustic Glass. I had it out on the interstate at 80 MPH this past weekend (first time on a 100+ mile trip since I got it in late March, due to the pandemic) and was impressed with how quiet and smooth it was...I also have a 2015, F15 w/ 19" run-flats. I'd say the G06 is quieter on the road than the F15 and either just as smooth or possibly just a bit less. My logic with the 21's was to split the difference, hopefully get a slightly smoother ride than the 22's and I really, really liked the 741M rims, so that was a major factor in the end as well. |

This is a constant debate for me as well. My M50i is on the standard 20 inch but I wish I had got the 21 inch which comes free for m50i, and looks better IMO.
Let's not talk about road quality for a moment as it has a lot to do with many factors - rim size, suspension, windows, car's generation etc. However, from a safety perspective, are run flats significantly better than non run flats?

Yes. You can continue to drive on Run Flats if you get a flat. It’s game over without them, especially if you don’t have a spare. Run Flats and a emergency DC tire pump can extend your damaged tire a long long way further than just the run flats because run flats will hold the bead to allow you to add air. |

Sorry to bump an old thread. I'm curious for those that are running the 22"s, are you on Air or Adaptive/DHP? I have a Range Rover Sport on 22" and the ride is pretty nice, but it's on Air. I'm curious if I'm going to be hating life on the Adaptive/DHP with 22"s.
