Error code 108B39 - Charge air temperature 2: plausibility, temperature too high

2020 X5M Comp. No tune or downpipes. Just BMC filters, Dinan Xpipe and Akra rear section exhaust. Recently got this code twice after stepping on it for a few secs. It comes on and goes off after a few secs. Car drives normal as far as I could tell. I pulled the code using BimmerLink.

Not sure if I’m imagining it but on the highway I feel like the acceleration isn’t as strong as before. Low speed power feels fine.

Any ideas?

Not sure if this will solve your problem, but I’d check the temp sensor for the charge pipe. Usually located after the intercooler. Could be that, a wire, grime, disconnected/loose pipe fittings, maybe even a fuse or something. I wouldn’t go so far as to say an intercooler or turbo issue before checking those things first.

Just a thought, since there isn't a low level sensor- check the intercooler coolant level, small tank on passenger side. Or possibly the electric coolant pumps (2).

Someone on the M5 forum suggest the same thing. The dealer did recently work on my waterpump/pulley and it looks like they removed one of the intercoolers when doing that job. I know the main coolant tank is always full since i can check it easily. I haven't checked the other one yet.

Wondering if there is a specific procedure to bleed these systems since from my understanding they are completely separate.

No doubt there is a bleeding procedure, most likely with a vacuum pump. So the codes showed up after the work?

The code didn't show up until a few weeks after the work was done and not all the time. Both times it happened it was after a full throttle highway event which i don't do often with all the traffic around here.

Just checked the smaller coolant tank and it was empty! Prior to the dealer doing the work it was definitely full. I poured in about 10oz of coolant before it was topped off. Doing the bleed procedure now then going to recheck it after the engine has cooled.

Edit - after doing the bleed procedure and letting the engine cool down it took another 12oz of coolant. Hopefully at some point it stays topped off or if not that means I have a leak somewhere

Circling back on this. I've since heat cycled the engine and also performed the coolant bleeding/burping procedure half a dozen times and happy to report the secondary coolant/system is staying full. I was able to fill about 40oz of bmw coolant total over several heat cycles. That just means the asshat tech at Rallye Bmw forgot to fill my system after they worked on my car (new waterpump/belt/pulley) and i've been driving around this way for 2 months.

I think its taken this long for the code to pop up because 1) I don't push my car very often since i'm with my wife/kids and 2) the weather was cooler. Now that its warmer out the intake temps must be just getting over the threshold where its pulling boost and throwing the high intake temp code. This would explain why I was noticing lost of power during consecutive highway pulls.

This is why I prefer to DIY whenever I can!! Also pretty stupid of BMW to not put a sensor on the secondary cooling system when the main one for the engine does. My car has been at the dealer two separate times this year getting work done and both times they screwed up something. Time to look for a new dealer...
