I filed a report with NHTSA about this issue some time ago. I got an email from them yesterday indicating they are speaking to BMW about this and asked permission to share my VIN, which I granted.
Anyone else? |

Ok, so I mentioned in another post that I had got an alignment and it fixed the problem. I had assumed it was because I hit a grate on the highway, although that would mean the 2019 X5 is really fragile (because I’ve hit much worst with my 2016 and have 50k miles and never needed an alignment.) This seemed to ‘fix’ the problem — however, I also started parking inside the garage right after the alignment, and out in the cold before that. I know exactly what you are talking about, I hold the wheel straight and off it goes, left or right but unlike a normal alignment issue, it’s not always the same direction. My software is still something like 2018/11.45 (not sure that’s from my memory). Either way, it’s warm out now so an update would likely make no difference.

Also, I would put it in sport mode and the drift was less noticeable. Out of sport mode I had to constantly make micro-adjustments in the steering wheel direction to keep it on very straight roads

Has anyone heard anything that might resemble the root cause of this steering issue? "It's a software issue" is not a root cause, it's a platitude. It's one thing if this really is a result of overaggressive lane tracking correction, but the stated facts in this thread don't seem to support that with a) cold vs warm weather differences and b) all assists turned off. I'd love to know an actual root cause, or in the absence of that, a plausible root cause that actually fits the facts.

My dealer has been advised by their area service rep that the software fix is being tested (where, at this time of year, I’d like to know) and unavailable for release. Guess most of us will know come January.

The problem must be a bit complicated for a fix to take this long. I’ve also wondered how it could be a software issue. I wonder if they are trying to get the software to fix a hardware defect. The NHTSA should get this going. I do know a number of dealers are barking at BMW about this.

Separate from the cold-weather shimmy, we found the lane departure steering intervention way too aggressive within an hour of taking delivery (as widely noted). The lane departure warning was set to ‘reduced.’ Well, maybe that was our fault ...
After months of keeping the lane departure off and the steering intervention disabled, I changed the lane departure warning to ‘early’ and enabled the steering intervention. Voila! Now the intervention is far more subtle and more easily overridden. (And it’s less aggressive than the intervention in a contemporary Mercedes E-Class, FWIW.). It’s now worth keeping these settings this way for the intended safety benefits. Who knew?!? |

i've set mine to reduced and its tolerable sometimes and other times its hyper aggressive Regarding the steering issue - ive noticed that if i break pretty hard at speed, teh backend gets very squirly. feels like its sliding out a little. its warm (70's-80's) and i don't have the 4 wheel steering package. its odd enough that i wonder if its there and just not listed somehow. is that similar to what others are talking about here? |

jimv03, I’m on 03/2019.35 (downloaded early last week).
imfletcher, I doubt you’d ever encounter in Texas the steering issue discussed in (most of) this thread. The vehicle twitches or shimmies left and right a few degrees a couple times a second, regardless of vehicle settings, tires, road conditions, etc. By most accounts it occurs after the vehicle has been parked for several hours in temps below 15F (“cold-soaked”) and steers like that for 15-20 minutes (until the vehicle fully warms up). Our X5 has been parked outside in northern Michigan since last November, so it’s been cold-soaked on a regular basis. |

I have no clue and I didn't ask the software update but they did it anyway with my KAFAS camera replaced.
