Nightmare story of my M50 finally showing up. Recommendations?
So more than two months before the shut down I ordered an M50. It was due to be built the week before before the shut down. It never made it.
When things started up it was not next in line but put off several weeks. Then week by week random delays. Then all of a sudden it got moved up. It was completed last Thursday. I watched it ever step of the way. So excited. I live a few hours from the factory. The car was delivered to my dealer last Friday. Pickup the next day. Saturday morning I get a text from my salesman telling me there was a problem and I would not be getting the car I ordered but would be first in place for a 21. I almost passed out. When I finally got the sales manager on the phone he told me the car failed delivery inspection. The AC didn’t function. I asked if they had sold my car to someone else. He told me I could come see it. There was my car exactly as I ordered it in the shop taken apart. It was the compressor. They said the part would not be available for a month. I told them to take one out of another X5. They said they needed to confirm that the compressor was not VIN matched. They would let me know today. I got the call today and he said that it was not the compressor but the compressor fan. It would come in tomorrow and take a few days to fix. Of course I am leaving for vacation and won’t be back for 10 days. Am I crazy to take delivery of a very expensive car that has had to have major repairs before I paid for it? |

The problem is the entire 2020 BMW V8 line has this issue so taking it out of a dealer car might not fix it. I am sure BMW should know by now as the defect is so wide spread so waiting for your ordered car to get the part in still might still be the best strategy. I would want to inspect your car with a macro lens to make sure its perfect (other than the AC).

Are you pressed to add it to your fleet? If I didn’t absolutely need it, I’d prob just pass and move to the MY21.
No sense creating issues for yourself down the road. If you can wait, I would. |

I had the same issue a couple weeks ago. I identified the AC wasn't working when I left the dealer lot to drive home. I brought the car right back. The dealer identified the issue as a faulty compressor. They replaced it the next day by taking one out of an X5 on the lot. I've put 1,800 miles on the car since then and it's been operating perfectly. |

If this story is a nightmare for you, then you lead a wonderful life!
Personally, I would wait for them ‘21 assuming they can still put all your options on, and ask for a loaner until it gets there. If the ‘21 is off the table I would ask them for an extended warranty due to the car being taken apart already to fix a known issue. Either way, there is inconvenience and it sucks a bit, but at least your dealer seems to be willing to make it right for you. |

I'm sorry but I don't know. It's working and I'm hoping it stays that way...

BMW needs to dump their AC compressor supplier asap. They should also fire the BMW engineer that approved it. I'm not sure how their supplier contract is setup, but if it was written well, BMW should be asking for reimbursement for all of the costs that have been incurred as a direct result of these failures so soon after production and delivery. Hopefully there's some clause that allows BMW to just walk away.

The downside is the build for 2021 and options. No soft close doors for example. May not be an issue for you. I would review the 2021 build sheets to see what might be the difference. cheers |

Just be happy your dealer actually check the AC system before turning the keys over to you. In my case imagine taking ownership of an X5MComp just to have the AC compressor fail on day 4 right after getting all of the windows tinted which mean you can't open the windows for a few days!
BMW seems to be on top of this issue now because this is going to cost them a boat load of money if it turns into a lemon/buy back situation on a bunch of very high sticker price cars. Alan

On a side note this is crazy that since your car just rolled off the assembly line last week that it is still fitted with a faulty AC Compressor. That means there will be ALOT more cars being sold that will potentially have the same issue!

Seems strange as mine is 3 weeks old and no issue (yet with the compressor). That said I'd just get it replaced and move on. Fault's occur on cars all the time and this isn't akin to sub-frames cracking like they did on the E46 M3 or actuators failing on the E92.

Not every one will be bad. I've had mine for 6 months, 5,500 miles and don't have an issue with the A/C (knock on wood).

So apparently it’s fixed. It was the compressor fan. I am out of town and won’t be back for another week.
I was told that BMW has been overseeing the repairs and testing. The dealer said that BMW intends to do something for me. I am going to ask for the full extended warrantee and maintenance plan. |

No offense, but this is so far from a nightmare. Your dealer caught a problem before you did and is taking care of it ... good for them and you.
Would be surprised if you got ~$5k worth of maintenance and warranties. Sounds like you're being a bit opportunistic as you weren't stranded, won't lose anything in depreciation, etc.
