High Mileage G05 Service Log

I bought a used 2019 X5 xDrive40i with 62,000 miles back on Jan. 31, 2022. I average 50k miles a year commuting between Santa Barbara and Beverly Hills/West Hollywood for work. That being said, I think I might have the highest mileage G05 out there. For anyone interested in long term use and reliability, I’m going to list out what I’ve had to replace in my ownership so far. Note, I also have a maintenance plan that covers up to 125k miles. So anything like spark plugs, brakes, or belts are covered until then. I also want to note that I do not have any of the service records from the original owner. The dealership wouldn't give them to me because legally they are not my property. Therefore, I won't be able to account for anything that was done in terms of maintenance or anything covered under warranty in the first 62k miles.

- 62k miles (01/31/22): I bought the car when the weather was warming up and didn’t realize the driver’s side armrest heating didn’t work. My service advisor says I have to replace the entire center console to fix it, and I’m not ready for that yet.

- 71k miles (04/11/22): Oil change and rear brake pads.

- 80k miles (06/10/22): Oil change, air filter, cabin filter, front and rear wiper blades, M Performance Exhaust install.

- 85k miles (07/18/22): The driver’s seat massage and lumbar adjustment stopped working. No diag for this yet because I didn’t use it much. Oil change, mounted and balanced 4 Pirelli Scorpion Zero A/S Plus tires, and alignment.

- 90k miles (08/30/22): Oil change, cabin air filter, and front brake pads. I also did a preventative transmission fluid and filter exchange, a transfer case fluid exchange, and front and rear diff fluid exchange. All of this cost me $2,992. Parts were $1,344.61, labor was $1,750, and I got a $200 discount for being a BMW CCA Member.

- 95k miles (10/18/22): Oil change.

- 100k miles (11/22/22): I got an intermittent check engine light for the active grille shutters. They needed to be replaced for $1,100. Note: on certain models, BMW is extending the warranty coverage because they know they are starting to fail.

- 100k miles (11/22/22): Oil change, air filter, cabin filter, and spark plugs.

- 100k miles (11/22/22): Both front tension struts needed replacement because they leaked their hydraulic fluid. This was $1,875.

- 105k miles (01/05/23): Oil change.

- 108k miles (02/02/23): I noticed a very bad creaking sound. Technicians found the ball joint boot on the driver’s side was torn and needed replacement. As preventative measure, I did both sides for $1,600.

- 108k miles (02/02/23): The technician found one of my cooling systems to need a flush because the fluid had gone dark. To have both systems done, yes, there’s TWO cooling systems, it ran me $466.

- 110k miles (02/20/23): Oil change and cabin air filter.

- 110k miles (02/21/23): When I picked the car up from its 110k maintenance, I had a "Driver Restraint System" malfunction and the emergency brake switch wouldn't release when I pressed the switch down. Turns out the seat belt latch needs replacement because the electronics went faulty. I didn't get a quote for the switch, but the latch is going to run me $539.51. I was going to do the switch myself, but I can't replace it with a used one because they are coded to the car (like our keys) and I don't have any of the tools to do the reprogramming.

- 112k miles (03/14/23): I got an "Emergency Services Malfunction" during all of the rain in California. Since it didn't affect driveability of the car, I waited until my service to get it checked.

- 114k miles (04/04/23): Oil change, new key fob battery, and rear brake pad replacement.

- 114k miles (04/04/23): The car didn't restart (Auto Start/Stop) when accelerating from a stop light. Towed the car to the dealership and they found that it needs a new starter and a new battery. The dealership was able to work with me on pricing, and I was able to get the starter done for $1,562. I'm going to do the battery myself because I can't justify almost $700 when I can program it at home for the cost of the battery $375.

- 114k miles (04/07/23): When I went to pick up my car after getting the starter replaced, I found the antenna cover in the rear seat, and the dealership had to reattach it to the roof. In the process, they found the module under the antenna (the one causing the Emergency System Malfunction) was corroded due to water leaking onto/into it. Since the dealership had to cover the cost of labor to reattach the antenna cover, I covered the cost of parts at $1,150.

- 119k miles (05/31/23): Oil change, front and rear wiper replacement.

- 119k miles (05/31/23): I have to get the massaging seat diagnosed because I got hit by a wheelbarrow on the freeway and the collision center won't be able to reprogram sensors if the seat doesn't work properly. There was an internal failure in the massaging/lumbar control module. The tech also found the wiring for the seat belt latch was pinched and was getting power to ground. Since the seat needed to come out anyways, I only had to pay for the part. The module was $2,280 and the latch was $145.

- (06/19/23 - 07/14/23): The vehicle was at the body shop to get fixed after I got hit by the wheelbarrow on the freeway.

- 122k miles (07/29/23): Mounted and balanced 4 Continental ExtremeContact DWS06 Plus tires and alignment. $1,243.02

- 123k miles (09/10/23): Oil change, key fob battery, engine air filter, cabin air filter, and front brake pad replacement.

- 124k miles (09/14/23): Brake fluid service. I got this done because my maintenance contract expired in 170 miles and the brake fluid became eligible on 9/13.

- 129k miles (09/21/23): Oil change. My local dealership offers 3 years of unlimited oil changes for the flat price of $225. Starting here I have to cover the cost of any other maintenance items (air filters, spark plugs, brakes, etc.). My service advisor and I are hoping to see the cost of oil changes go down to $7.50 each (30 changes in the next 3 years).

- 134k miles (11/13/2023): Oil change, and micro filter. I did the micro filter myself since the dealer wanted $425 for them. Cost of the micro filters: $45.

- 134k miles (11/13/2023): Mounted and balanced 4 Continental ExtremeContact DWS06 Plus tires. $811.37. These were cheaper because the local tire shop prorated two of my tires since they wore unevenly and they were within the 50k mile manufacturer warranty.

- $139k miles (01/03/2024): I've been getting excessive vibration from the rotors, and suspected that they were warped. After the previous brake jobs, the car would vibrate during braking 5k-10k miles after the rotors were resurfaced. The dealership worked with me since I service the car there exclusively. They covered the labor, and I covered the cost of the discounted parts: $1,346.05 total.

- 146k miles (02/19/2024): Oil change at the dealer; I replaced the engine filter and the micro filter. Cost for the filters together: $83.00.

- 150k miles (03/27/2024): Oil change.

- 152k miles (05/03/2024): The car threw a check engine light. When the dealer ran their tests, they found that I had a fuel tank ventilation system malfunction that was being cause by a faulty vent valve and a faulty natural vacuum leak detection valve. I also had the tires rotated since the tech found the fronts are at 8mm and the rears are at 5mm. Total for the valves and the rotation: $943.05.

As the repairs continue, I’ll keep updating this list.

Regarding "100K mile both tension struts", are they fronts for rears? I take it you mean suspension structs, right?

I would say you where over charged on you transmission service look for Indy shop specializing in BMWs there’s one in an ocean side, that is very reliable. They also do a one price for lifetime oil changes.

Nothing crazy thats nice. But 50k miles a year also means you're always on the highway which is easy on the car overall. Nevertheless this is good information and very much appreciated!

This goes to show buying the extended warranty eg. 84 months for $3-4k is worth it. You paid out of pocket ?

Actually it doesn't. It may have been worth it for him if he would have had them done earlier. The Extended Service contact is capped at 100k miles. From what is listed the only things that may have been covered was the armrest and massage.

Yes in this situation with his milage it can’t be covered but regardless I think the warranty is worth the value for the cost of minor repairs on these vehicles.

History shows that from a financial point of view you will be better off not buying an Extended Service Contract. However many folks like knowing that they are covered for many things so it is worth it to them.

My warranty is over in 3 months.

I think to extend it will be around 4K. I will keep this 4K and hope for the best.

Yep I'm one of those many folks. I don't think I'll have an issue to justify the 4400 I spent, chances of that happening are pretty slim, but it gives me a peace of mind and that's the value I spent on.

It’s all about how long you’re going to keep it. I typically don’t want them after the first year alone three years I’m definitely itching for a new car so I’m not buying extended warranties. Once the warranty is up in three years I’ll be at the dealer with cash in hand and trading.

Don’t know where u toke ur x5 to for the trans, diff, transfer case fluid service but that was extremely over priced. Find an independent shop.

No, not the suspension struts. They’re call thrust or tension struts. They’re part of the lower front suspension.

Well, yes and no. 65% of my driving is usually in bumper to bumper LA traffic, which I’m sure isn’t very easy on the car. But that’s why I service at 5k miles.

The price for the transmission service included the front and rear diffs, the transfer case, and the transmission filter.

I did spark plugs at 100k. They’re covered under my maintenance plan, so I didn’t think to include them.

Yes, I paid out of pocket. When I purchased the car, the longest extended they offered was 25k miles for $12k and I knew that I’d eat through that in 4-6 months with minor to no issues.

It's funny you mention that because I had just talked to my service advisor about how a certified vehicle would have been ideal because of their unlimited mileage perk. But he said that the only repair that would have been covered so far were the active grill shutters/blinds. He also mentioned that most of the time, extended warranties don't cover interior components.

Extended SERVICE contracts, I would highly recommend, especially if you get a good deal on one. The extended warranties are a hit or a miss sometimes. My extended service/maintenance contract was an extra $1,600 to cover all service/maintenance up to 125k. So far, I'd say I've had at least $9k - $10k worth of maintenance work done at no charge.

You are confusing the items. The Extended Service Contract is the "extended warranty".
