Question Clock doesn't adjust to time zones?

My system clock is set to automatic, with my home time zone (mountain standard). On a recent cross-country drive the clock didn't change when I crossed into another time zone. My phone did but I had to change the car clock manually. This happened four times on the round trip.

What am I doing wrong? When we went off daylight savings, the clock reset automatically. I was using the iDrive nav system the whole way and assumed the GPS would handle it.

That is correct, it doesn't do it automatically. You need to uncheck and check the box and it will pick up the new time zone.

Thank you. So "automatic" doesn't mean what I thought. Odd that a car that will practically drive itself can't reset the time.

Lazy development/programming.

It will update itself as DST and MST change, so in a way, it is automatic.

I was very surprised by this. My 2017 Lexus would update time zones nearly instantly after crossing the time zone border.

German engineers don’t get a chance to drive across many time zone changes! The customer who does suffers.

Time Zone settings in ID7 are just buggy/poorly programmed. It's one of those things BMW just doesn't put an effort into fixing.

I've been driving into France from UK recently and while the car clock change is slower to happen than on my phone, it does happen (in both directions).

I don't see why it takes so long though.

I've noticed something slightly different. While mine did automatically change to DST, it does seem to gain at least minute a year.

So it's automatic to time *zone*, not the actual time. Given the car has telematics for accurate GPS (i.e. it accurately tells which lane I'm in), this seems a little odd!

You and I, among others, campaigned here to hope BMW would fix a simple problem but our pleas fell on those who would not listen.

Maybe BMW's logic is not keeping up with the leap seconds on the GPS timing...if so, they're behind the times as the last one was the end of 2016! There MIGHT be one the end of this year, but they haven't issued a report saying so. They usually occur about every 1.5-years or so. Reports indicate that the earth's rotation rate has sped up slightly, so haven't needed one since then.

GPS time is an incrementing number rather than a direct time format, and the TOD must be calculated from that.

Yes, you would think it would be a fairly easy for them to take sure the time zone is correct but for some reason after almost four years they have not addressed it. I wonder if the changing of time zones works on iDrive 6.

Actually, more than four years as the same issue existed in our '14 F15.

The time zone seems to work for me when I drive in Northern Europe. The change does not occur immediately when crossing the border, but it's still automatic.

Can confirm:
LCI 50e 2024 iDrive 8.5 still no automatic time zone change. Had to tun off automatic and turn automatic back on to change.

Bigger problem is getting the self-driving to automatically change from the left lane to the right lane (lol).

It makes somewhat sense to me that a car would take some time since you might be crossing the same time zones several times within a short period of time. I can see that it might be annoying if the car updated the time several times within a short period of time - so wait until you have been in the new time zone exclusively for a little while.

It is not, or at least wasn't, automatic in the US. One time I tested it by not changing it all day and letting it go over night. The next morning it still was an hour off. Checking and unchecking the box is what I do now.

Yes, agreed, doesn’t work in US. With BMW.
