Dealer Charging for ID7 software updates??
Are folks finding that their dealer service depts are charging $$$ for updating the ID7 software? I had mine updated for the first time yesterday since purchase delivery in Dec 2018. It went from 11/2018 .48 to 3/2019 .60
The service dept charged @$200 for updating the software. This was not paid by me, but I was told they generally only do it for free if there is a recall. I explained there are so many bugs...but just wondered what others are finding. |

Mine told me to bring it by whenever there is an update, of course schedule an appointment. He never said anything about cost....... I would find another dealer.

Can someone perhaps provide a better explanation? I have seen reports from members of this forum performing OTA updates and their iDrive firmware versions incremented to 3/2019.60 (or similar pattern). I really think OTA and dealer updates are the same, it's just OTA is not fully happening for all the cars out there yet, only small batches are cleared for OTA upgrades. So if you really need it and insist, then dealer can do it in offline mode. Otherwise it's a full iDrive firmware version that gets upgraded in both cases. The point was they shouldn't be charging for it in the first place.... I will have to dig around but this question came up before someone posted about the updates are free to the customer. Eventually everything will be OTA anyway... Dealer put smoke screen up!!!

In order to fully update all modules it will require a ISTA programming session.

If service didn't charge or something, every two months hundreds of cars would be coming in for updates. Plus it takes hours. They'd never have time to actually work on cars. BMW is going to have to get better with OTA's or dealers will be swamped. Mine just has to document some "issues" then they'll do the update so they can charge BMW for it as warranty repair work.

Dealers should not be charging for something owners are suppose to have had from day 1. I love my 40i and intend on getting another when my lease is up however if I’m ever charged for any update I’ll pass on the update and any future purchase of a BMW.

Certainly other issues not related to software are covered, why would a software update not be covered to fix the above? |

I agree with them charging for updates but there are a couple of exceptions. If the update is to add something which should have been present (like caring car etc) then it should be foc also if the car is in for a service it should automatically be updated foc during the maintenance. If my dealer tries to charge me under either of those two conditions I will be looking for a new dealer!

Doc5513:
Did the dealer ask you to pay $200 or did you just see the charge on the ticket? If they did not ask you to pay, it could be an internal charge or a warranty charge to BMW. |
